New Shack
« on: Nov 09, 2010, 05:17 PM »
Because of the rain, I started the new shack this afternoon.  Spent all day yesterday and most of today in the rain hunting swamps.  Didn't feel like it this afternoon.  :)
So started the new shanty.  I have the platform and runners done.
1/2" Advantek on 2x3 joist frame attached to 5/4x6 Veranda decking for runners.
I'm going to use my router and cut out three 12" round holes for 5 gallon bucket tops and glue/screw them into the floor.  I'll take pictures once I get far enough along.
Next time I get a chance to work on it, I'm going to insulate between the joists and finish the bottom with aluminum trim coil.
I'll then start working on the seats and walls.  Same basic design as the last one, only slightly smaller by 3" all the way around.
I made the floor 93" x 48" so I can put 2" thick double doors mounted on the outside of door frame instead on in it and be able to close the tailgate on an 8' bed.  The four corner studs that hold up the seats and roof, will be mounted outside the 48" not ontop, so I will have a true 48" wide floor. This is so I have enough room to drive an ATV or sled inside the shanty for transport.  Again, I'll take pics next time I work on it, and keep posting as the project comes along.
Don't expect this week, cuz no more rain and I need a deer.  ;)

Here is some of the floor and camera/jigging cutouts.

1/2" Advantek, 2x3 joists.  Pieces running down the middle, and you'll see why hopefully tomorrow.
Plastic Decking runners.
Picture of everything laid out.  I cut the tops of the 5 gallon buckets, then once I knew where they would go, used a pencil to draw a circle underneath.
Then used a homemade carpenters compass to get the center of the circles.  I then drilled a hole in the center so a sheetrock screw would fit tight.

I used my homemade compass to draw circles on the top of the deck.  Buckets are 12" wide, so two holes made in plastic 6" apart.
One hole screwed down in the center I drilled from bottom, and a pencil in the other hole.  Made my circles.

Once circles made with pencil, checked my work by putting the cut buckets on top.

Then to check my work again, I drilled holes on the pencil line on bottom in various places to see if it hit the pencil line drawn on top.
They did.

Actually had to go into that construction trailer of mine and dig out one of my tools.  The RotoZip with the hole cutter. Perfect 12" holes.

Now I flip it back over put wax paper down under it and put glue around the holes and glued/screwed buckets into place.

I plan on filling the voids around the buckets with "Great Stuff" and filling the squares with 2" board insulation I have left over from home building days.
I'm going to finish the bottom in aluminum trim coil.

I'll keep adding photos as more work is completed.

Pictures taken last week.
Floors have 1/2" Advantek, with 2 1/2" of insulation with aluminum trim coil for the underneath.
then a 2x2 sides and 3/8" fir plywood for seats inside and aluminum trim coil for outside and 1 3/8" board insulation in between.
I had the trim coil and vinyl siding left over from a house I built a number of years ago. Floors, walls and ceiling will have plenty of insulation.
I used vinyl outlet blocks to make small windows.  I just cut out the square cutout in the block and glued in some Lexan glass.  I have this on three sides.
I'm making some other windows with screens using pvc trim and lexan.
I also just designed a barn for my dad, and the siding guy bent up way too much sofit. I added two bends to the extra cut pieces and came up with my own corrugated aluminum roofing.  Much lighter than metal roofing.  There will be plenty of "Great Stuff" in the roof to stiffen it up.  The stuff you see on the siding in the picture is spray foam I used to seal the vent holes in the siding from the inside.  It expanded out the holes.  I waited for it to dry and snapped it off with my finger.
The end that isn't finished yet will have double luan doors sealed with contact cement and wrapped with contact paper.  I'll be able to drive my snowmobile or an atv inside this shack.  I'll also be able to use it in the cold north woods for late season camping.
I built a ramp for the snowmobile that slides under the shack when in the bed of the truck.  ;D
She's getting a bit heavy, but should last many years.

Nice looking shack!!!

I decided to go portable after having many shacks.
I tried it last Sunday and it works great. Just don't know how it will hold up on the big lake with a lot of wind

Good thinking, having it so you can put the wheeler inside. That'll save a trip every time you truck it to a lake, plus making more room in the garage during summer months. Nice. Looks real good.

Finally have her tied off of Cummings.
I was able to pull this thing with ease..  I launched from Avery at the foot of the lake and hit 25mph in seconds.  I could have easily gone over 40 pulling this thing.
I made tow bars using angle iron and found some really long racing skis to put on the bottom.  I had a few circus members ask me how much it weighed.  Towed it like a bat out of hell.   ;D
This is a perm.. that is really mobile..  I can move it at will.  I have tons of board insulation in the sides and floor, so it should be even easier taking off the ice in water/slush.  As it will float.  ;D

Hopefully you can view the videos I made of my mobile unit.

Did I see you trailering the bobhouse this weekend by the foot of the lake? I thought I saw someone trailering their bobhouse that looked like yours from the distance but wasnt sure.
