dumb question/ first ice preditctions.....

Hi, all. Ok here is the dumb question. Does it get colder quicker in western ma then central ma? because i have been watching weather maps and if its 50 in central ma its like 53 or so in western mass. but dosent ice form out there sooner? Also. I predict we will see ice end of december in central ma. and safe ice to me is 5 inches

I am in Western Ma and it is around 40 right now. There was a skim of ice on the small ponds we are catching bait in this morning. It was 27 degrees out at 6am today.

As far as the question with where in MA will be fishing first I think it has more to do with individual body of water vs which side of the state.  Wind speed has alot to do with early ice formation as well as temp....if the wind is blowing on the surface of the lake it will be an extra few days behind other lakes.  I know of a few spots that are surrounded by hills that lock up as much as a week before ponds that are less than a mile away simply becuase the hills block the wind.

My guess for the Northeast part of mass is that I'll be fishing just after New years......but I'm the kind of guy that likes at LEAST 6 inches before I venture out.

I've got the itch this year and will be looking to drive North in late December!  Probably North of the Conway area to get some early aciton!!!!
