Most Efficient/Effective/Reliable Hand Auger
« on: Oct 16, 2010, 01:03 PM »
I am looking over the brands and wondering how well each performs. I have only tried the Mora Hand Auger. Anyone out there got any input on the other brands and how they compare?

Lazor with sweedish blades. I have the 6" and love it. I do not even bring out my 10" jiffy until there is more than 18" of ice. :icefish:

I was just reading about Lazors. Was also looking at the Nils High Velocity. I bought my woman a laptop for her birthday/christmas so she owes me something nice.

I've only ever used my 8"Eskimo, after 7 or 8 seasons it still slices through the ice with the original untouched blades. The only way I would change now would be for a power auger

;D If you bought her a laptop, she owes you an auger with a motor on top at least. Tit for tat .... :)

after doing the research last year
i believe i will be going with a nils 6in
i like the idea of it being able to cut under its own weight

ive always used a 8in mora
with no complaints except when they blades were dull
but with the amount of hole i have started cutting while
fishing
its time for a change

Nils is the fastest hand auger I've ever had.  I can out drill power augers with it.

Whatever auger you get, get one with offset handles and make sure the blades are not made in China.

Never touch the blades to ice unless you are going to drill a hole and make sure you're not drilling through dirt, dust or other debris.

I treat my auger blades like they are made of glass to ensure they last a long long time.

I do not let anyone use mine. I would rather drill the hole for them. ;)

I had an 8" Lazar. It was so bad that the guys with gas augers would come over and cut the last few holes for me. I have a 6" Mora that does a better job. For a larger hole I would recommend a power auger. Also with any hand auger you have to be extra careful with the cutting head. If you screw up the angle, It's junk.

i was told the nils blades can be pretty fragile and finicky. 6" also worries me as i will be fishing for pike this year alot.

I have personally seen a 27 lb pike come up through a 6 inch hole...

6 inch hole is quick and easy and most fish slip right through fine.granted i have had the fish squeeze happen when you pull a fish out whos head just fits and body wont.if your going to get an 8, might as well have gas powered because crankin on 8 inches all day gets you beat pretty fast!
