Wow Jake it sounds like you are doing pretty good! I don't think I remember you having that much last year and you still have a lot of time left!

I wish I could keep bait this year! :( I spent a couple weeks last month catching fall fish just for fun at a spot one of my CAG members lent to me.

For now I will just sit here... and sit here...and sit here!

(Image removed from quote.)

About a minute from my house, and i've put traps in there several times...   loaded with all small shiners and tons of little pout.  Nothing good for fishing.

Hey Ed, good to see you around the site! I had my ankle 'fixed' - too much use and abuse as I kid.  I could hardy walk through the woods without taking a spill. I had a harsh one this summer and decided it was the final straw.  Let's just hope I can get on the ice! It looks pretty scary right now!!  I'm planning to though.  The Mass guys already have found ice crutches for me. LOL

Maybe I've taken all the big ones out of there? Just kidding! Actually that spot is harsh because amongs other things it's out in the open. I got spoken to once by a PO for tresspassing (on the side of the road). However there is bait there for the taking.    I personally like the littles ones for jigging though - you can't buy them in that size many places.

I don't think you have much of a problem with horned pout when you float your traps. At least I never did once I started doing that. If I recall at that little spot I think I only got 2 of them in the 5 of so times I have trapped there.

Anyways, how about right there on Reservoir? You have to walk down the hill though.   I have some other places.

Hi BW,

How do you float your traps? And do they float on the top so they are visible from shore?

You can PM me if you prefer.

Thanks,
sully

Those look like giant Suckers Ed.  Carp don't have bottom facing mouth like that. The dorsal fin of Carp is also quite distinct as it is very lengthy down most of the fishs' spine.  Those are seriously some HUGE suckers/creek chubs... I'd go make the DEM give you a record for one as many states do keep one for the species.  I've seen a picture of one (from RI) that was supposivbly 7LBs.      Then again, if you did that the DEM probably wouldn't even know Suckers exsisted in the state.... and if they didn't they wouldn't know they got that big.  Just as the DEM officer who witnessed one of my Carp catches this year didn't know Carp exsisted as a species at all.  (After he asked me if I was stuck on the bottom...... and then asked if I was fishing for turtles when I said no.)

Regarding Carp through the ice.  Personally I have not although I'd like to this year if I have time.  Friends of mine however did quite well this year on the Charles through the ice.  They used 6ft poles I think and just baited the holes the night before I beleive.  Frankly it was hilarous!  It makes sense though, here in RI the CAG has caught Carp in every month of the year for 2-3 years straight now.

Jake - do we have to call them chub suckers! Sounds so dirty! LOL

Pulled the traps out today. Very slow the past few days. I wonder if the Full Moon has anything to do with it. Oh well I'll give it a rest for a few days.

How do you guys keep them alive for long periods?  I have found my ponds just never have much success keeping them alive.  I am guessing a large tank with filtration?
