Freezer Fish - How Old Have You Eaten
« on: Jan 30, 2010, 10:15 PM »
Yesterday, I found a package of year 2000 ice fish pike fillets.

I figured I would pressure cook them up for the dog. They were frozen in water in a ziplock bag.

Last week I broiled 4 nice fresh pike fillets and they were very good. So I told my wife, we gave 7 year old freezer fish to our friend and he said they were excellent. We have eaten 5 year old freezer fish before.

So I said to her, lets experiment and fix these year 2000 pike fillets just like we cooked the fresh one last week. AND I DID! : )

Results, they were EXCELLENT!

My wife said they were just a bit dryer but I had one thicker piece that kept the pan in the broiler a bit longer.

I'm not kidding, 10 years and still good.

OK - So fess up, how old a freezer fish have you eaten?

I defrosted the fish while in the bag and then rinsed them and soaked them in a cup of milk for an hour before putting butter salt and pepper and broiling them in an infra red oven that was preheated to 550 degrees before the broiler was turned on. Less than 10 minutes for a full pan to cook.

Mine really do get eaten within about a year, but I have found and eaten three year old fish before.  Sorry, I know that's not too impressive. ;)

Vac-packed or in zip lock bags w/water,two year old fish is still fine, not like fresh but edible. If older the zip lock's seem to be freezer burnt, here and there, dog food or garbage, very seldom have old fish but every once and a while a bag will get hidden in the freezer.Last year I kept a lot of fish(maybe to much) but it turned out well, because this year,I only could get on the ice twice, but did get 64 bulls, that make 5 bags.

I dont freeze fish anymore. I only keep enough for one meal and eat it that day or the next. If I have more than I need I give it to friends or family.

I freeze my fillets in a bread pan full of water and have eaten them up to 3 years old. and they were just like the day i froze them. My gramps has been freezing fish like that for years, they never get freezer burnt and never loose any taste. Its the only way to freeze fish in my opinion

I think it is better to set a goal of eating them the same day or as soon as possible.  We all know fresh fish is better than fish than fish that has been frozen.

I put fish in a ziplock and fill it with water to cover all the fish, It seems to last very long this way. Just don't let any air by the fish just water.

I ate some crappie from 6/08 the other day.  They had been vacuum packed.  I soaked them in milk and they were wonderful.  I have over a two hour drive to catch crappie and good blue gill.  I put quite a bit in my freezer from 1-2 trips in the summer.  I usually bass fish and catch release them, so in order to eat fish, I rely on what I have in the freezer.

As long as they are not freezer burnt we eat them. I only eat fish from ice fishing. All spring and summer and fall fish are released. I recently found a bag of crappie from1-22-04. I gave them to a friend who said it was some of the best fish he has ever had. Put your fillets in a zip lock freezer bag fill with water and get out as much air as you can.

My question is how long will thawed fish last in the fridge? I took out some frozen fish on Thursday and havent had time to cook them yet. Will they still be ok after 4 days?

MichiganMafia- I would just do a stink check with it. If it doesn't smell bad...Eat it. I'm a little more cautious though when it comes to my kids but I would eat it after 4 days thawed.

fish deterierates slightly as soon as its frozen. its much better fresh, but once frozen it can be kept pretty much indefinately. Scientists pulled a full frozen woolly mamouth out of a glacier a few yrs ago. It had been frozen solid for literally thousands of yrs, they claimed it was preseved well enough to be eaten. Anyone for mamouth steak?

I agree with the others, give em the sniff test. I own a restaurant and I have had fish last a week in the fridge and others a couple days. It also depends on the kind of fish as to how long it lasts.

I have had fish in the freezer for over 2 years.  Asl long as they are packaged well and don't have freezer burn, they should be fine.
