Warmer weather this weekend
« on: Jan 13, 2010, 02:24 PM »
Hi All

I am looking for some feedback/opinions on what the ice conditions will be considering temps in the 40's are forecasted for this weekend. From what I hear the ice is about 6 - 8 inches thick now. How much will be lost and will it be safe to go.

Thank you

I just checked weather.com and only see Friday going above 40. Every night will be below freezing as well. I think we'll be fine.

You guys think we'll be alright??  I saw potential high 40s on Saturday, but you never know, every station is different and they all change their tune by the minute.  I need to do some wrenching on one of my jeep Saturday but was hoping to be able to get out on some ice on Sunday....but didn't like that high 40s forecast.  Hope it's safe!!

There is really only one way to know for sure though.

6"+ of black ice, some "insulating" snow on top of that, and temps heading up into the 40's.
If anything, we'll just have a sloppy, slushy cover over that 6"+ of black ice.
Unless it rains, the ice will be safe this weekend. Just wear your waterproof boots and bring your creepers as well!

The only thing that is gonna happen is, I'm going fishing!!!
It might melt some of the snow on the ice but the ice will be just fine. Don't worry!!!
If fishing was work I'd never be sick!

everyone freaks out when it is warm out for 1 2 even 3 days... it needs to be well above freezing durring the day and above freezing at nights to do any damage . The forecast is changing. not gonna be as warm as they figured not for as long. 1 maybe 2 days at best above 40 degrees and then its back in the 30's. the night time lows are going to hover anyway between 18 and 29 so no worries there....just relax it's not even halfway through January and everyone is worried about a Thaw./....lol 8)

Thanks for the input everyone.

For the record I m not freakin out  ;D
I just want to be safe especially since I am going with a group and there will be kids there.  ;)

Anyways there is no need to take a swim before my weekly bath on Sunday :) :)

So thanks again for the advice and good luck getting the big ones to all my compatriots here on the Shanty.

Also for the record, we have a "January thaw" EVERY year. It usually last a couple of days and just ends up turning the snow cover to mush, which freezes over and creates those lovely "pockets" we all break through, thinking we're on thin ice, only to realize it's just a crust. ;D

LMAO, The ice wont melt at all nothing to worry about and most of the places I have been fishing latly have had around 8 inches on them so even if we lose .00001 of an inch you'll be fine
