Lake Seymour
« on: Jan 12, 2010, 07:40 PM »
Hello I'm new to the board.  Iwill be fishing Lake Seymour in Morgan Vt. this week end with some friends. Any advise on strategies for lakers, salmon and cusk / burbot would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance

Also how many cusk lines can you have and are they in addition to the four allowed per person.

well what i use is cut bait.........i start off with some perch bait and jig it on a Hali jig. once i catch a smelt i will cut a small slab off from it and use that.....on a good day i can catch 50-100 of these little boogers a day

Orian,

Nice choice. Always done well on opening weekend. Unfortunatly can't get their this weekend this year. Have a camp on the east side.
It is four lines total day or night. It does not matter if they are for lakers or cusk.

Lakers- Smelt, Smelt, Smelt. I believe that you will catch more if they are fished dead, on the bottom, from 10' to 35' of water. Also fish some suspended from 4' below the ice to five feet off bottom over varius depts.

Salmon (Browns)-Live smelt. Catch them befor day light. This can be done just about anywhere on the lake. Fish them just under the ice from 3' to 50' of water.

Cusk-live or dead bait near the bottom at night. Action should be good.

Good luck, have fun, and keep us posted.

Orian,

Your getting good advice. I am a regular 20 years on Seymour
couple trips up there per year. Beautiful lake some of the nicest looking
fish you will ever catch. Suggest setting 3 tips and then jigging.
Jig and move ever 15 minutes. 3/8 ounce jig white bucktail with or with
out a piece of smelt, swedish pimple sm/med size need to use fluoro
line as water clarity is amazing. Careful walking out bring your spud I
hear it froze late and has lots of snow on it. I hope to check it Thursday.

cut bait will work or if you can get yourself ahold of some small pinheads. those seem to work well, but as the other guys said, use a hali's jig. they work awesome...anycolor.

I have a camp on seymore and I am pretty sure there are no cusk in it or burbot.  Unless you have a four-wheeler, I wouldn't be afraid to stay close to where you walk on.  Right of the access is really good for lakers and salmon.  There is a nice drop-off right there and every year I'm told that they pull some nice fish right there.  Also, don't be afraid to set your jacks in shallow water. Good luck

Seymour is loaded with Cusk fish for them at night on the bottom with some dead bait.

Also don't think about fishing for lakers with out smelt.
Seymour is a great place to fish fishing can be slow be it is usually worth.

Also some nice perch fishing in certain place. Great brookies and big browns in the shallows. My two biggest brown were 9.4 and 7.6 lbs. Both from seymour.

Haven't fished Seymour, but fisheyes perch or smelt work great for smelt too once you catch one.  Smelt like to push line up and in deep water can be tough to feel, if your line feels light you probably got a bite. J

rboot,

Where is your camp? Mines down Elliot Acres. Cusk are actually easy to catch in there. You should give it a try some night.

Thanks to everyone who replied.  Good advice is appreciated.  My friends camp is on the est side of the laks roughly in the middle according to what he says.. The lake seems to drop off very fast in that section.  Should we stay close to shore 30-50 of water or walk out farther?  Seems to get deep very quick on that side. ???????????

rboot,

Which sunken island is your camp near by the boat launch or over on the west side of the lake?

I have a friend that has a camp on the very southern end of the lake.  I used to ice fish that place a lot.

Fishing is too slow for me with only four traps.  That is why i switch to walleye fishing.

Good salmon fishing in front of that channel that feeds out from elliot acres.

I think seymour is full of cusk.  At night time i have caught them all over the place.

Hello All and thanks for the advice....  Seymour was pretty good for us this week end.  Friday afternoon was interesting fifteen feet off shore and the ice chipper was going through the ice at 1 1/2 inches.  Saturday morning at 4:30 I walked and drug the auger behind me for suport and zigzagged a trail out to 45 feet of depth. Off the trail and you were on 1" of ice and in the water.  Set traps and the pop up shanty up on ice from 3-5".  Well we scored Ok for the first week end. In 24 hrs. we landed 9 lakers, 2 salmon both over 20" and 13cusk, burbot, ling or whatever you choose to call them.  Largest salmon 27" roughly 5#s.  Largest laker 21"  largest cusk roughly 24"  lost a few big cusk at the hole jiggin and snapped some lines at the hole on traps.  OK 6 # flurocarbon needs to be raised to maybe to 10 # but all in all a good first week end.  Hope the feedback and info helps.

Orion7  PS Jiggin with a white and red bucktail jig with Cut shiner tail on the end.  Most cusk jiggin between 8 and 10 pm.

Unfortunetly  the Salmon was Buthered /filleted by some newbie before we ever got a picture.  He wanted to cook it up...   All I can say is SLAP.....  Everyone gave him hell for filleting it...
