Lake Storey / Galesburg / 1-7-10
« on: Jan 11, 2010, 11:25 AM »
headed out for some crappie fishing the other night. winds were gusting at 20-30 mph, it was about 17 degrees with a windchill that brought it into double digits.

set up near the dam around the pillar. shoved the vex down a few open holes and saw a slew of activity.

set up shop, got the heater going and within 2 or 3 minutes had our first crappie. 9 3/4".

last year we fished lake story and caught out of about 2-300 fish a handful over 9". its over populated but dnr took off size restrictions as well as any limits on them so people over the last couple of years have been working to get fish out of there...well it seems to be paying off....after 3 hours we iced 50 9-10" crappie with a few 11 incher's mixed in.

after about an hour, my partner was out fishing me 2 to 1. same bait same actions same everything....finally i'm like what in the hell are you doing differently. he asked what i was doing....i told him i was taking it to the bottom and then bringing it up slowly and getting the fish on top to hit....he said i stopped doign that 40 minutes ago....use that vex to make sure you get your bait down to the bottom and then just jig it...after a couple of minutes, raise it up...don't even look at the vex.....

after that it started to even out...he probably caught 30, i had 20. great night.

there are plenty of fish in there are they are relatively easy to catch.

no but i'm really tempted to give some spoons a shot.  i'm using small 1/80th ounce hair jigs tipped with a spike.

will be out there all day on saturday.. if the bite slows i will toy around with some cj&s spoons and minnow heads.

i usually fish it in the afternoon and night with the better bite being at night....only been this one trip though...

i fish the dam side (the far west on this map) around the round concrete pillar.  its all 30ft of water and the crappie are loaded up in there.

Had some luck with gulp but I caught a hundred at least with a bare gold spoon.
Same as everywhere I'd stay away from community pillar.

Country Inn and fairfield inn are about a mile south of the lake, 5 min. from lakes dam. By mall and Sirloin stockade.

Based on what I have seen on other lakes I think better fish ought to be in other places.

go north about 1 mile take left, go about 1.5 miles road turns south " west end of lake" at top of hill turn left into boat launch area, you will see dam at edge of lot.

bite was a little slow saterday, did land 3 nice crappies. Looked like small village around piller, after dark.
Ice fishermen still showing up at 6:30 pm. C.O. was out earlier in day, didn't bother anyone. I thought he would check people coming and going , but didn't check me.

Me and a buddy fished Sunday night for about 3hrs. Caught about a dozen 9" crappies after dark. The bite was slow for us and everyone we talked to. We were in the village by the pillar. Has anybody else had better luck?

12 inches of ice! It has to be "spongy" not clear right? how much clear ice is on the bottom? how uniform is the ice?

Went out to the lake tonight. The bite is very slow. We only got 7 keepers in 4hrs. Still a good 10"-12" of ice. Its not soft ice and is still uniform. There wasn't many guys out tonight so I think the word is out.
