Chubby Darters
« on: Jan 04, 2010, 11:21 PM »
A buddy of mine has had quite a bit of luck jigging chubby darters for trout off the bottom.  He's kinda tight lipped.  Anyone have any recomendations on color or sizes.  Trout are anywhere from 15 inches to 15 lbs(potentially).

#3 perch, shiner, dace or roach. In stained waters go with glo.

Don't forget Orange!

Rainbows like gaudy colors.   Trolling up here we get Rainbows on Orange / Silver, and "Watermelon" which is Red and Green with Black dots.

Hope this helps,

Wiener

Cant tell you much about using them on trout but I can tell you that its worth it to swap out the factory hooks for aftermarket ones because the hooks they come with are GARBAGE.

I've been having lots of good luck with the Salmo Chubby Darter, especially those new holographic glow patterns.  Got perch, channel catfish, and even mooneye's to bite this lure.  Not sure what has caused the hot bite change up, but it's more than just a fish attractor for me now.  Awesome, that it's has actually become a fish catching lure.

Do you guys tip any of the hooks with a minnow head or something?  I have tried to use these and still haven't caught a fish in 2 years of use.

I start plain first...if I get fish to chase and stare at it without biting, then I tip it...usually only small piece of tail section of minnow or plastic like gulp minnow tail.  In a way, I don't officially count that as the actual bite on an artificial lure.  I only count it when it's all hardware.

The worst part of a Chubby Darter light bite is that I suspect that crappies are biting on the head.  I can pull them for a few feet, then they let go of it.  >:(

Walleye and trout love em.  I prefer the Lindy Darter, though.  They have rattles and a nicer action.

I'm using #3 Dalmations for crappie and inhaling isn't the word for it, luckily I can keep them because they swallow it so deep they're bleeding from the gills.
