Cape Cod Ice
« on: Dec 16, 2009, 05:53 PM »
Still wishing for ice here on the Cape. I will be heading off Cape hopefully first weekend in January if ice is good around the Westborough area. Fished at the stump a couple of times in years past and itching to start the season. It will be at least 3 weeks if the weather stays cold here and that i highly doubt. Thanks to all that have helped me with areas to ice fish off Cape. Tight lines

Ever fish Plashes in S. Yarmouth? I used to fish there as a kid and the bass were pretty good. Haven't been there in years.

No i have not. Im in Centerville and there are plenty of closer ponds that hold nice fish and are not over fished. The only problem come winter is they don't always freeze over. Thats why i have to head off Cape.

I know how you feel about ice down this way Striper51, most of the time i leave all my gear in Maine because we don't get enough to make me comfortable on it. I have fished a few brave folks from the water that was supposed to be "safe ice". Do you hit the trout ponds on cape?

I have but i like to fish for pike. I can drive to the lake in about a minute so i try to fish there. The fishing can be hit or miss but its worth it. Its the last to freeze over so i fish many smaller ponds first.

Love that pond! I have iced quite a fe out of there to 12 lbs but have seen bigger. Great pond to jig big perch and also got some nice bass and pics. I fish the Cape as soon as there is any ice, no where better for action.

There will be no ice anywhere near the cape anytime soon. Altho it is bistery cold out, the winds are keeping the ponds wide open for the most part.

Checked a couple of small ponds today. Sheltered ones had about and 1 to 1.5 inches of ice. Non sheltered were open water. Lake not even close. Small ponds might be good for next weekend. Yeeehaaw

I agree, the only thing the weatherman is can predict correctly is it's going to be dark and get light, but even I can do that. Wouldn't surprise me if all we got was a dusting

Yeh, the insulation factor...wareham ponds had skim coat toaday..just started to some hard. temmps next week below freezing...might be a messy first ice..we have 1/2" of ice with 2 feet of snow on top..a week of below freezing temps that means sometime between christmas and new years wareham and south coast we will be on ice but what that will look like I will tell you in a couple of days but my guess is marginally safe in most areas...messy lumpy and mixed....I'd love to see 6" of hard black ice youcan skate on...we won't have that I can see that now!!
Still if you look around south coast wareham and upper cape should be dangerous but fishable after xmas I think.

Would like to check some ponds today but don't know if i feel like trudging thru 20 plus inches of snow. Even if it is safe it's going to be difficult to fish. I''ll have to manage.
