Oak Lake ice
« on: Dec 06, 2009, 05:46 PM »
Was at Oak Lake today there is 5-6 inches of ice with some slush in places found as little as 3 inches in a couple of places the fishing was slow but I never moved around very much it will need a few more cold nights before its good to travel on.

Tried the west side never had a bite or even seen a fish in 3 and half hours watch the ice as you get out there past the the small heave it seems to get thinner the further out you go.

Ice should be plenty thick on Oak Lake by now, after the cold and wind this past week. I won't be out there until the Xmas break.

Try anywhere, walleye are spread all over the lake. At worst it's slow and steady with a mix of pike and 'eyes'. I highly recommend avoiding the crowds ... I did best at least 1/2 mile away from other shanties and fishermen using a live minnow presentation on a light jig with spring-bobber. Have heard others caught while aggressively jigging 'salties' ... whatever works! There was at least 16" of ice at most places that I checked.

Although it may be better for some later afternoon/dusk, walleye are definitely being caught at all times of the day and at all sizes from mid-20"s down to 8" juveniles. My son caught one 12.5" perch as well.

It's fine for anyone that has time and patience ... just don't 'expect' to catch a limit, and you won't be disappointed.

I was out yesterday with my daughter ended up with 1 walleye, today i went back and caught 4 walleye (2 keepers) 1 pike released.  I caught 2 of the eyes on dead stick and the other 2 and the pike on a jigging spoon.

Last I heard there were some being caught, but that was during the nice stable mild weather. Now the winter storm is raging and cold-front North wind forecast. At the very least I recommend checking road conditions before deciding to travel this weekend ... http://roaddata.gov.mb.ca/map/gmap/map.aspx?lng=-99.99&lat=49.8&zoom=9.
