Help for preventing sore knees
« on: Nov 07, 2009, 07:59 PM »
I would like to know what you use for cushioning your knees on the ice.
I have tried the throwable life cushion it just kept trying to blow away. I tried some knee pads but they seemed to just keep sliding down and cutting off circulation. I currently have the ice armour suit with some padding in the knees and it does help some but I would like a little more.
thanks

As long as the ice isn't wet around a hole. I throw my gloves down and kneel on them. This is another big reason I am a fan of big oversized mittens. They double as a heck of a knee pad.

lol. I thought that at first too but then realized I throw my gloves down before tending to a tipup simply out of habit.

I talked to a neighbor that is a flooring guy and he uses Platinum Knee Pads. When I tried them they seem to have a lot of padding. He felt the straps were to short when I had the bibs on and came up with a idea on how to lengthen them. He offered to let me borrow them when I go fishing. I'll let you know what their like when ice comes.

Stop praying so much, and fish more.

Sorry, couldn't resist.  Go to Home Desperate and check out some knee pads.

for several years I have used catcher shin guards.got me a set at a garage sale thinkin they not only help with padding, but keep cloths dry. Even with waterproof suit they work wonders.

I saw some ice fishing chaps at scheels that looked pretty nice.  Made of vinyl with knee pads built in.  Meant to soften the kneeling and keep water off your shins from drilling backwash.  I asked Mrs. Santa for them last xmas but she said they were sold out.  I have the Arctic Armor Camo suit, with light kneepads built in but they aren't enough and when wet, the fabric collects a lot of ice and snow.  I have been using cheap foam knee pads but they are a pain to keep adjusting.  I guess I'm on my knees a lot when the action pics up, it's easier on my back.

Thanks guy's. I got the same razzing last night from the Mrs and her friends. I hope that using the new sled I built this year will alleviate some of getting down on the knees.

i just use any kind of kneepads i find at homedepot, if it's cutting off your circulation get your wife or tailer, etc to add some velcro to make the straps longer.  tried carrying the foam pads but it turned out to be a hassle, i just keep the kneepads on all day.

I usually use those chaps for ice fishing....if there is alot of snow, it isnt so bad, and the arctic carharts, long johns, wool pants, etc..provide enough padding, but if there isnt much snow...the chaps come in handy...nothing like putting all your weight down onto a little ridge in the ice, or a couple of frozen ice chunks.....sawblade, nice shacks.....

I use any of 3: 10x16 inch foam pads, 2 are kneeling pads and one is a camo seat for hunting. I use a strap with snaps on it to secure it to a bucket handle or any pole, even to the hammer loop on my overalls if it`s windy.

Then, in or around the shanty, you can put them under your feet and sit on the other which is w-a-y warmer than not using anything.

Triple purpose. Keeps your knees from hurting and dry, keeps your butt and feet warmer too.  :)

I like these.  I don't put them on until I get to the area I'll be fishing.  You'll have to adjust them every now and again, but they are comfortable.

What I would do is find some rubber/foam matting (like those really cheap camping mattress pads.) cut out a rectangle to fit your knee, then take an old tube sock, cut off the end, and pull it up over your knee. that should keep it in place (maybe?)

Those knee pads for construction are nice but huge. I know they work better but they might be excessive. Unless you kneel down a TON

Because I'm so tall, I'm always down on one knee anytime I'm scooping ice from a tip-up hole, checking bait, landing/measuring/unhooking fish, changing lures or re-tying my line, etc. So I started wearing the $20 "All Terrain" style gel knee pads sold at just about any hardware store. They've got a nice grippy rubber outer shell that holds your knee up off the ice and out of the water, long stretchy velcro straps, and they help keep my pants dry and keep the wind off the knees on the snowmobile ride across the lake. They do slip down occasionally, but it only takes a second to re-adjust them. I won't fish without them anymore.
A bad day of fishing beats anything else I'd be doing today.....

I fish from the kneeling position because I find it more comfortable than sitting on a bucket, and I'm in a better position to grab fish or move my transducer cable out of the way.  I also hole hop a lot, so I find that I can move a little faster since I don't have to carry and reposition a bucket at each hole.  Also, if you slip and fall on the ice you don't have to worry about smashing your knees... they have saved me a time or two!   ;D
