New Jig Tying Materials
« on: Oct 31, 2009, 07:22 PM »
A friend of mine killed a bison yesterday and as we were skinning and packing I decided to take a bunch of the long mane hairs and make a few ice fishing jigs. I will post pic's when they are done. I was just wondering what other unusual materials or hair that people use?

for years I would cut small tuffs of hair off of the cat's bellie to make jigs, and the dogs tail would get trimmed some as well.

I hope the bison works because I have some fur that I got helping a friend skin one, I was going to make streamers out of it but I may change my mind and make jigs instead.

One of my favorite furs for tying flies is dark brown fur I combed out of my late chocolate Lab. It makes a great substitute in flies like pheasant tails; not only can you brush it way out, it is nearly indestructible. It also will work for ice jigs if you want something buggy. Just clean it off the brush and bag it.

  • Ice fishing a sport, or just reason to buy stuff?

I bought a mink collar off a 1920's granny coat at a yard sale for $2, made many great flies with that one.

my dad used hair off of a whitetail deer for many years.  He dyed them a couple different colors as well.
