It is true. Friend of mine knows the guy who caught it. He called me about it at the time it was caught. So he did not know anything about a worlds record through the ice. I told my buddy to tell him to check it in to the state ASAP because he told me it was 27.2.To close to mess around with. He thought it was a joke until he contacted his wife and she looked it up on the web and saw that it was no joke.
Then he believed both of us. The fished was 27.35lbs      44 1/2" long    22 1/2" girth. I have a picture of it on my phone, it is unreal even on a cell phone.

The state I am sure is going to go through the hole fish for age, belly contents, scale samples and whatever else they are going to have to check to verify the record. They have short life spans so when they are that big I would have no problem keeping them.

The only amendment I made was adding "tip-up" to the world record - I thought "Mass has lost the crown" made it clear that the original record was from Mass.

Apparently it's a pretty big deal since the world record was something like 8 pounds more because it wasn't from under the ice.

Don't quote me on the number

That is one humungous fish.  Must have been a rush pulling that through the hole.
