Here you go...If anything's not clear let me know.

Parts list ..RG'S tipdowns;
ROD:
12" - 1/2" wood dowel
12" - 1/2" PVC
1 - 1/4" (small) eye hook
1 - plastic spool reel
1- #8 common nail
1 - oring ( to fit the nail shank)
1 - #5x3/4" wood screw
1 - flat plastic faucet washer
1 - beveled faucet washer

STAND:
12" - 1 1/4" pvc

ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS

ROD::
-insert dowel into pvc about 2" ...glue in place...I use hot melt adhesive
-sand end of dowel round...just remove the rough edges at the end
-screw eye hook into side of dowel close to the end
- attach faucet washers to pvc near the middle in line with the screw eye...screw in place with wood screw... beveled washer facing the flat washer. This is the line keeper for storage.
- mount the plastic reel to the pvc at 90 deg to the line keeper and screw eye...I use electrical tape. Position as shown in picture
-find the balance point.(approximate, you can fine tune later)..drill hole for nail in line with screw eye and line keeper
-push nail through and put small oring on nail to keep it from getting lost

STAND:
-cut a notch lengthwise into the end of the pipe about 1 1/2" long and 1" wide
- cut 2 v-notches about 3/8" deep into the ends ...I use a file...the nail rests here.

FINE TUNING:
- Spool it up with line...I use 6lb green Trilene
- run line through the reel guide and through the eye hook
- For perch I use a 1/8 oz sinker on bottom and a #6 gold aberdeen hook up the line 6" to 3' depending on the bite
- set up the tipdown  on your bench without the sinker  and see how it balances. The butt end of the rod should tip down gently with the rod tip up. I use wraps of electrical tape around the butt end to adjust the balance. You can also add a cap to the end if it needs more.

TO USE:
I drill a second shallow hole next to the main hole and pack snow or the slush from th hole I drilled around the stand to hold it upright.

Good luck...have fun..experiment...catc h perch!

I made afew of the RGFIXIT tip-downs and they are the ticket!  The guys I fish with drove me nuts all summer to make them some.  They are easy to make, store and use.  On the days when the fish are on the bite they are the ticket.  When we went to the shanty shindig on Chautauqua last year I cought the only perch all day on the tip downs but right before the end another guy got one on his jigging rod and beat me.  They were alot of fun after dark for the paper mouths as well.  I put them in a circle and put the lantern in the middle.  This year I am going to put tiny glow sticks on the back of them and give it a try.

im curious where those of you that use tip-downs, use them most? what kind of a situation determines ups pr downs.
reason i ask is because i made some a few years ago, (suprisingly similar to RG'S) but i dont use them as much as the first year i made them! what i found was that on places like conesus, its so abundant with panfish that you never sit still and get much time to jig. so i use the ups there for the bigger fish! i tried them on lake eire in the buffalo harbor where im only targeting perch really, but it was more productive to jig for them as the downs didnt work well there! the only place i have had good luck with them, was when we go down to the whitney point res. for the crappie derby! everone seems to use them there and they are really productive!  so whats everyone else's take on this?

also, are there any companies that manufacture these or are they just and "old school" home made idea?

Hey Oak,

There is a nice pic of the "Rock n Reel tip down on page 61 in the 2004 In-Fisherman Ice Fishing Guide.  They appear very well made.  I don't know the cost, but the two phone #'s listed for information are:  (218) 751-9669 and (866) 333-2160.    Hopefully an ice shanty member has purchased these and can comment as to their worth.

I have not used tip downs to date, but was thinking about either making some of RG's type or purchasing a pair of the above.  I attended last year's Whitney Point Crappie Derby and as you stated saw tons of them in use.

Are you planning on attending the Derby this year?

Oak,
I'm mostly a run & gun jig kinda guy, but when the the big perch are in a neutral mood, and I'm convinced their in the area, they could make the difference of just a "couple" day and a very good day.
One of the best ways to take the kids fishing too.  Have them chase  a bunch of tipdowns while you jig!!!!

I like the idea of putting the kids on the tip-downs!  Good call ice guy!  If the fish are on they would be busy all day and would not forget a day like that.  My kids like the shallows on Conesus because they can sit on the floor of the shanty jigging and see the action first hand.  All I hear is dad a huge on just went by the hole or come on fish bite the jig its right in front of you!  Better than any TV show in my oppinion and they don't move from the hole unless they have to use the bathroom.

Hey Mike,
I remember your son in the shanty at the I-Bay get together. He sure had fun catching those little perch. I can just see him running around the ice chasing tipdowns ;D

Good Stuff

Here are some I made using scrap lumber and a few $6.00 combo's from Sportsman's Guide.

A hinge and hook eye make them foldable to save room.

They are stable on the ice and in the wind too.

A bit of solder on the handles can be moved up and down to allow for different weight lures/bait.

I copied these off of a post on the Shanty.  I can't remember the thread or who it was or I'd give them the credit.  I usually fish the white ones with a small minnow and a drop shot rig.  I've caught a little of everything on them but they seem to work best for panfish.  This year I'm going to pick up some cheap combos like Doubles Shooter has.  Every once in a while you'll get a little slack and loose one.  The Lake Erie's I fish with a bigger minnow and do pretty well on bass and channel cats.  Like other people have posted, when the bite is on I usually stay with the jigging rod.  They don't take too much room so I usually have them in the sled.

I've also put some reflector tape on the ends since these pictures were taken so they show up better at night.

Here is a couple of mods to rgfixits tipdowns.  I made them 36 inches high, so there would be less bending down.  I also made a base for the tipdown to attach to.  Just some scrap plywood I had laying around.  I also cut a 3 inch piece of 1 inch pvc, and attach it to the plywood with L brackets.  Then I notch the bottom of the tip down pole so that the L brackets fit in the notch.  This makes a self standing, stable based tipdown.

I know this topic is dated but I wanted others to see the pics that addicted to ice fishing posted.  The reason they didn't come up correctly is because all the link code is jammed together as one long URL.  I've separated them.

I made 5 of these out of a piece of scrap 2×4 I had a buddy rip it into 1/2 strips and cut the rest with a jig saw I cut a paint roller up to get the wire for the teeder the paddle is 14" with the grove being 12" so every rap is 12.5" the base is 10"L X 4" W 6" T and folds down to 1 3/4 " I put 100' of 6 lbs line that has 2 lbs diameter it cost me around $2 to make all 5 and about 20 minutes each to make I also use rubber bands to hold the wire on so I can adjust the balance point
