As I'm not real smart, here's a dumb question
« on: Jan 21, 2009, 05:19 AM »
I saw that tiger perch are on the list for bait in the book, just a question to clear up some arguments.
Fishing for pike and jigging for perch you catch a small perch. Can you put it on a tip up for pike?
Same lake same water, counted towards a limit of perch.

You can use them for bait, but that fish counts twards your limit, if you put one on each of your tipups(5) your limit for perch is now 45 NOT 50.

Log perch. I wonder where you have lots of log perch.

I caught my first few last year in the Genesee River. Fished there for years without ever seeing one, then in one month, I caught a few on worms. One even hooked himself on a Rapala that was about the same size as the fish. They were only about 3-4 inches long. I sent a picture to the DEC for identification. It was a surprise visitor.

Just to clarify....In NY, Can you put a small YELLOW Perch on a tip up if it is counted against your limit?  My son keeps asking me to do it, but I keep telling him that I don't think you can legally use a YELLOW perch for bait in NY.....

Yes you can...as long as it is counted towards your limit and you use it on the body of water you caught it in...I use perch and bluegills if I jig them up small enough.

the DEC informed me that any fished used for bait, be it a perch, sunfish, trout, etc., needs to be of legal length, and counts towards your total for that day, even if it gets off the hook.

i have started using small bluegill and perch on my tipups if i don't feel like buying bait.  can't say it hasn't helped my success but it has not been any worse.  Yes it is legal.

I was with Phil on that question... I have known people who have talked about using them, but still nobody actually knew if it was legal or not....but apparently the Northerns love 'em..... 8)

If it is a logperch it does not count against your daily limit of yellow perch. Logperch are not a gamefish. Are they an approved "Green list" baitfish? Or does that only count when you aer buying bait?

Has anyone ever actually had an encon officer pull up your line and check the bait. I have been fishing 20 years and never seen this just wondering. I say if the pike eats the perch then no it dont count toward your daily limit it would be the same thing if the pike ate the perch and then you caught the pike.

Just a question, if your bait comes off how is it counted?  Isn't that like the old "if a tree falls in the forest and nobody is there to hear it does it make a noise?" I don't know about the rest of you but if it's not in my bucket I'm not counting it.  If you hook 10 perch in 50ft of water and they are all 3 inchers, they usually don't do well from that depth so they die on the way down to the bottom after you release them, are you in the hole by 10 towards your limit? If the rabbit cops can see what I'm using for bait and then count my catch I would give the guy my wallet for actually caring that much.  Don't see it happening anytime soon.

did you catch it, and keep it? yes, so it counts as part of your limit, whether it gets off the hook, or it flops out of your bucket on the way off the ice. pretty simple, really. the law is the law.

i have had an encon officer " check me out " while i was fishing in southbay for pike and big cats. he saw i had a bucket of small gills and white perch, asked what they where and i told him.. "BAIT". all he said was good luck.

if an officer where to ask that you show him your bait. and you wheel in a perch. claim that you must have fowl hooked him, and kindly let him go. lol

it doesn't matter what kind of fish it is, as long as it is a legal catch, you can use it as bait! read the whole thread. ::)

it states any baitfish or legally taken fish species intended to be used as bait can only be used in the body of water it was caught in. page 24 baitfish regs. also there is no limit on perch in Hamilton county
All waters Yellow perch, sunfish All year Any size Any number  under special regs for Hamilton county

I believe the perch isn't considered a gamefish because it has no size limit Like pooley said. Therefore it must be legal. Where's that retired eco at?
