Thanks for the advice however i do not have chicken or shrimp here I will have to try these methods though because the local bait shops by me do not think the fish bite until after 9 in the morning and that is to late for me

If you look in the Michigan DNR fishing rules under Bait shops, Section 13, paragraph 9 you will see that it is illegal for a bait shop to call themselves a bait shop if they open after 6:00 am on weekends and 6:30 weekdays, the only exception to this rule is if they were drinking the night before. (paragraph 21). Go look for your self....

Don't forget when some of us were kids. A piece of hot dog or bologna, one or two kernels of sweet corn, certain candy bars (rolled up in little balls), just to name a few.

I'm a big fan of wigglers if you can get them.  Of course if your bait shop isn't open, the chance of getting wigglers probably isn't real good.  I've tried the gulp baits this year and have caught a few fish but they certainly do not outfish live bait.

HAs anyone tried the Gulp Alive baits?  I haven't tried them yet.

I do good on the berkley gulp fake waxies or spikes. The power wigglers do good as well. They also work for steelies in the spring. Good luck out there.

PowerBait did real well for gills in the summer.  So far no luck through the ice, but I intend to keep trying.

I have had excellent results with the GULP ALIVE waxies this year they stink something fierce but they seem to get the fishes attention.  We had just as good luck with these as minnows when fishing for crappie we had both and i caught just as many on the gulp alive as live minnows also we have been getting tons of gills with them i'd give these a try if i were you they are a little pricey at 6-7 dollars but you get a ton of them and usually you can catch 6-7 fish on each one.
