George Lake, Upper Whiteshell
« on: Dec 21, 2008, 02:32 PM »
Has anyone fished George Lake in the winter?

This year my better half and I are renting a cabin and ice fishing shanty on George lake in February. We have never fished this lake and were wondering if anyone has any tips or advice?

White tube jigs or Northland jigging lures in minnow/glow. Tip them with a bit of sucker belly or frozen salty. Ice should be real good by Feb. unless we get a ton of snow in the next while. Take advantage of the Lake Whitefish as they are very plentiful in George. Lakers are one daily there as high management.

Thanks a lot FF! I have not yet caught a laker though the ice. Although whitefish is a different story. Back in Alberta we used wire worms to catch the whitefish. It was alot of fun especially when you can see the whitefish coming for your hook and you had to turn your line so the hook lined up with their mouths. This way we would get a good hookset. Anyone else use the same technique here for whitefish?

Lakers are a cinch through the ice. Once you get above them it's like shooting fish in a barrel. Trout in George average about 3-4 pounds... an 8 pounder is a big one there. Nice looking fish with a natural population being very light with good shoulders and small heads. Some of the stocked fish from days gone by are much darker though. Lot's of big northerns there as well.

White's are different here, fish in deeper water with electronics.

Hey poor fisher, I might be looking for company on a trip out that way. I have a sled if you need a ride. How long is the trail to get there? Does anyone have a map they can pass along?

I have it all mapped out on my Garmin GPS. You can get there from Point du Bois or from Nutamik. It will be short ride up the river then a 1km path through the woods. Then its all lake. You can also use Google Earth to zoom in to help you out.
