How far is too far?
« on: Dec 23, 2008, 08:14 PM »
Just thinking about ice fishing, and I'm sure I'm not the only one!

How far is the farthest you'd walk through forest to get to a good pond?  How far would you walk on that pond once you got to it?  How far would you walk on a pond you can park next to?

I've walked 3/4 of a mile to ice fish my summer hotspot, I used to walk the brook to get into it since it's flat, but my buddy found the weak spot once and that put an end to that nonsense.  I've walked about that far over ponds to get from the parking to the good spots, too.  Does that make me crazy?

Depends on the pond, for a salmonoid, sure. For pickerel, nah.

sometimes i set my tilits over a couple hundred yards apart and 1/2 to 3/4 mile walk is about my limit to get where i want to fish.

Does driving count? Last Saturday I drove 3+ hours in a blizzard just to fish. Left the house at 2:30am.

its not always about what you catch, its the adventure and peacefulness in the fishing... id much rather walk a mile and fish a decent pond than walk 100 yards and fish a crowded one

Sometimes you have to go that extra distance if you don't want to be crowded.
I like a little space to myself, except in derbies, where space may be limited.
I will tend to start off close to shore when its windy, but will set up traps as far out as I can see.
That also depends on the shape and depth of the pond/lake as well.
