Couple years ago a 60+ pounder was caught in Lake Superior or Michigan in Michigan waters. Suppose to be the world record hook and line. I will look for info.

Here it is: May be State record not world.

Lake trout weighted 61 lbs 8 ounces, shattering the old record by more then 8 lbs

A fifty-one year old , Michigan, Lake Superior Lake Trout record was broken on Sunday August 17, by 16-year-old Lucas Lanczy of L'ance, Michigan.

Lucas was fishing with Charter Captain Duncan Price , Fisher Price Charter Service of Chassell, Michigan, when he caught the 61 lb-8 oz. monster, shattering the 1946 record held by Angler Ned Watson.

Lucas was on an eight hour fishing outing with his family. They had already boated over 20 fish with three other Lake Trout over 30 lbs. "We were just getting ready to pull lines when the fish hit," said Captain Price.

"It's a good thing Lucas works out regularly. He can press 300 lbs." Captain Price added. "The laker was in excellent shape and Lucas did everything right during the 25 minute battle."

The fish was caught while jigging with 12 lb test and spinning gear. With a girth of 36" (six inches bigger then Lucas's waist), measuring 48" long , and 61 lbs 8 oz the catch may be a new world record for 12lb line class.

Michigan DNR took scale samples to determine the exact age.

Captain Price was fishing Stannard Rock area of Lake Superior, located 40 nautical miles north of Marquette and 26 miles southeast of the Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Stannard Rock is one of Lake Superior's most remote fishing reefs. This natural fishing reef is an underwater mountain range of approximately 1x5 miles of pinnacles that almost reach to the surface from depths of nearly 600 feet.

The reef is loaded with native Mackinaw Lake Trout that often exceed 30 pounds.

"This is a very dangerous fishing area, said Price, "sometimes we venture 6-8 foot waves to get out, I would not recommend anyone navigate to this area without a professional guide."

haha - my secret spots all have about ten-foot swells and whitecaps all the time, too.  and the ice is very unstable.  wolves and bears out there, too.  don't dare venture there.

Bottom Dweller, at the bottom of the article was a phone number and contact name for the charter captain. I am sure he said this to drum up business. I deleted it from the post.  ;)

Lloyd Bull netted this 72 lb mackinaw in Great Bear Lake, Northwest Territories, Canada in 1995.  It is recognized as the all-tackle world record lake trout by the Canadian National Fish Registry, the National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame, and the International Game Fish Association.
It was caught while trolling, on a Huskie Devle spoon with a single, barbless 10/0 hook.  Bull was using a 30 lb monofilament leader attached to 27 lb lead-core line.  The monster fish was netted shortly before midnight, August 19, 1995.  It was brought to shore, measured, weighed, photographed and amazingly, successfully revived and released.
Bull recounts that in the 3 1/2 hours prior to landing the record, his fishing partner Eddie House, and himself, hooked more than 30 fish, weighing 18 to 38 lbs.  The record was caught at the same end of the same reef that Bull's previous 56 1/2 lb all-tackle record lake trout was caught.
Bull claims to have hooked, but failed to land, even larger fish in Great Bear Lake.
  The mount is a replica.

Not to stir up anything, but HOW do you hold a 72 # fish that was "still alive" & even relased the way he is holding it??  It's stiff as a board!  Look at all the other pics of the fish people are holding & how they are "slumped" over the hands.  I CALL BS ON THIS ONE!!!

I am glad I am not the only one that hasn't read the whole article, got mad then reread it and realized the answer was right in front of me. That fish is a replica and I have seen it once before. I also emailed a friend who has some friends with the MNR that is going to try and get me some information about the world record lake trout.

I thought the world record lake trout came out of Great Bear Lake in Northern Alberta?

Lol, Great Bear Lake isn't in Alberta...it's way, way north of Alberta...

Yep, a wee bit further north.   ;)
About 400 miles north/north west of me to be exact.  ;D
I've guided on the lake for 15 years.  8)
