Lake of the Woods report.
« on: Dec 22, 2008, 03:19 PM »
Hey All,
My buddy Mark and I got out this morning and hit Lake of the Woods. Temp was a balmy -28C but sunny.
Ice roads are in fantastic shape except for a big pressure ridge near Whiskey Island. Mark thought he'd try driving over it and after breaking through and hanging up it took us 10 minutes of digging ice chunks out to get out. All the while the truck is sitting 8" of water at an ungodly angle. One of the plastic hupcaps got smashed to smithereens on the ice. Nice start. All I could think was it was a good thing viciouscircle wasn't with us or he'd have had a heart attack seeing all that water. Uneventful ride the rest of the way until south of Shammis. No trails off the main road so we broke our own. Got to our spot and drilled a few holes. Got into walleyes immediately. I hauled Marks fish in while he parked the truck as a windbreak. Then I hauled in a real nice 18" fish. Fishing then slowed down with Mark catching several dinky ones then I got a 16". Mark got a few more keepers then I got a fat 19" and one more about 16". Mark probably caught 2 for every one of mine but was catching and releasing a bunch of little ones. We were freezing our nuts off by now so we left at around 2pm and had a pleasant, uneventful ride home, seeing only a few fresh cracks we created on the way in. Ice was clear and about 13" all over the place even though there was a great deal of hard packed snow all over. Lots of drifts showing previous slushy areas but everything is tight now.
I'll probably head back out again this weekend. The 4 fish limit isn't going to feed my family so I'll have to go out again. Darn ;D
Later,
Glen

I forgot my camera and Marks was frozen from being left in the truck. Was an absolute beaut of a day with the Sun. Wind was a son of a gun though. Cold as heck.
Back at it on the weekend.
