rope lights vs lantern
« on: Dec 16, 2008, 07:34 AM »
Wich one if the two are brighter.  I have never used the rope lights but was thinking about putting them in my fish trap voyager, but I need all the light i can get.  Are they as bright as a lantern?

you can get them at Fleet Farm for 10-15 bucks...........I haven't used them and I don't think that they would put out near as much light as a lantern and look at it this way at least with a lantern you get a little heat out of it ;D

The only problem with the rope lights is that you can't take it with yo when you hole hop or go and check tip-ups.  I usually fish in the shantywith the lantern on low, heater kicking, and a headlamp that I can turn on if I need to tie on a new jig

Lantern is much brighter. The ropelights will give enough light to operate in the shack but not do anything like tie knots and stuff like that. Personally I would stick with the lantern, my .02
How many times do I gotta go through holes before I watch where I'm going? I am an amateur fisherman, but an all star minnow drowner!

Has anyone used some X-Mas LED lights in the shack? I was thinking about getting a couple of strings and just hooking up to a battery?

I have the first ice rope light, Bought on sale last year at Gander Mountain. They are not very bright, but are nice to have as a back-up. I may install a second set and see how that works. It is nice that they are mounted out of the way.

I have the solar powered LED lights on some bushes here at the house and they don't stay lit up  very long. I would not buy them again for at the house or the shanty.

Is that the one that runs on 2AA batteries? I bought one of those last season and it stunk. It wasn't very bright and it had a bad connection or something in it 'cause if you moved it the wrong way it would go out.
I returned it and got a 3 LED visor light instead.

I am so accustomed to having my lantern with me over the years that I can't imagine not using it. Not only the best light source and a portable heater, but works great to thaw a slush beer.

I've got two of the Rope lights From clam that i put in My Fishtrap Voyager. One was ok, two was nice. Just nice since they are out of the way, and I can't forget to bring them. Not quite enough light to tie with if you use clear line. The colored line I can see and tie with the led light though. At $30 or more they are a rip off IMO. Check out Red Rock, they had a generic rope light that was the same thing as the clam for 1/2 the price. We just use our cameras in the day, then when the battery isn't strong enough to run the camera anymore we set it aside and it will power the led lights all night.

I use the rope lights in my old flip shack.  I have 2 strings overhead, and one mounted under the seat.  The two up top run off a 12V battery that I carry just for them.  The underseat one is a AA battery one.  I like having 2 systems because when you tear down and load the sled the one under the seat give off good light.  Sometimes I leave it on all the way to the truck if the load is a little questionable.

I've used the 12 volt acessary light {bought at auto parts store}that has an on/off button and uses an 1156 lamp. I've replaced the 1156 with a led circuit board from super bright led,This thing is only 1 1/2" square and plugs into the 1156 socket. Puts out lots of light 120 lumens in the cool white model. Very impressed, I mount the light fixture to my middle pole of my otter den. It's always there if I need it. I usually bring an extra vex battery but you could probably run both on the same battery?? Use a led head lamp for moving around.

I have three of the rope lights in my Yukon. I like the amount of light, but they do not compare to a lantern. I do not usually tie knots at night. I usually have all the rods rigged before it gets real dark. If i get broke off I have a headlamp light that I could re-tie with if necessary. I think that the lantern would be too much light, but that is just my opinion. Hoped that helped.
