Gettin' chummy with it...
« on: Dec 02, 2008, 01:06 PM »
Do any of you guys chum your holes?  I'd be curious to know what you use, for what species.  So far this year, I'm hearing everything from sardines mashed up and mixed with cod liver oil, to egg shells, corn, rice, barley...just wondering what the ice-shanty contingent has to say about it?

I have used rice before and it didn't seem to do much good . If you do try it make sure you cook it first so it can expand before the fish get a chance to eat it .
Egg shells do work as well as cheap canned cat food .

Don't expect to use a flasher after chumming the water. A friend tried it with oatmeal I think and his Vex lit up like a Xmas Tree.
When Hell freezes over !!!!  I'll be there icefishing!!!

there are some pellets you can get from Canadian Tire.  they are for trout.  and you drop a couple down your hole and apparently it attracts them.  i don't know if it works, probably better for set lines and not for vex's!!!

i also heard that trout like cheese!!!

Used to back in the 80's but not anymore. Really don't want the fish bloating on most of the stuff people put down there holes. We have put a camera down a few permenent huts and boy what a mess.. Bring them in with spoons.
If your really thinking of it then put some in a jar of water for a few hours to see what happens to it.  I've always found it hard to fill up on a Turkey dinner after eating a bag of patato chips.

Hey Johnny,

I tried last year...had some left over carp groundbait (marine halibut pellets) and PVC netting bags which dissolve slowly in water. Dropped a couple of bags down the hole...we were after whitefish....we got lots of fish but i did not notice much difference as we always do pretty well at that spot.

Sometimes I would chum with cut up minnow but nothing else stuff like corn and some of those pellets
are bad for the fish.
Caught a couple of trout out of a spot my buddy was fishing a week or two before and he was chumming
with corn. When I cleaned the fish there bellies were full off corn. The corn looked like it was fresh out of the can because the trout couldnt digest it. :-\
Even chummin with minnows not the best idea as it could spread any type of virus disease the minnows have.
Im now trying lure scents like berkley trout or smelly jelly.
If you cant ride it, drink it or bring home it to bed, it aint worth having!

i rarely use live bait when fishing for perch. I still buy a scoop or two of minnows from the locals around the lakes i fish(have to support them or they will be gone). I  use the minnows for chumming, let em sit on the ice maybe 5 -8 minnows at a time then crush em up and send down the hole a little at a time . The shiners we use  look like  glitter going down the hole and usually attract fish(if they are around) or keep em around. Another way to attract them is using a big spoon on a jiggin rod and smash the bottom with the lure. perch will come in to investigate. works for me any way.
