How do you keep spikes/maggots from coccooning?
« on: Feb 20, 2009, 12:01 PM »
I've been having pretty good luck on crappies this year tipping baits with what we call maggots, also known as spikes or euro larva.  The last two tins of them I have bought have coccooned or cased up after only a week in the bait puck.  I've tried keeping them indoors at room temp and also in the refridgerator, with similar results.

Is there a way to store them so they don't coccoon/case up?

You are keeping them way to warm.    Keep them around 33 degrees if possible.  Even a little colder won't hurt.

I have always had luck keeping them in a metal container in the refrigerator when I am done fishing for the day I just put my bait puck in there to

keep mine in the refridgerator at 33 degrees F ...even left in my jacket(which is left in the truck) they hold up...a little frozen, but still usable.

I guess I've never run into an issue with mine. I leave mine in my puck in the truck. Of course it's below 30 here.

I used to keep my nitecrawlers in a cottage cheese container in the fridge growing up. My two sisters stopped getting any cottage cheese containers out of the fridge.  :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao:

My wife doesn't have a problem with bait in the fridge. I'm really lucky to have her.
I live in the midwest now but have fond memories of fishing in New England as a kid.

My Wife is the same way, but every now and then I find some Spikes or Mouseys next to my potatoes at dinner.

As others have said, store them in cold temps... I keep mine in a bait puck in the bottom of the refrigerator.  It is also a good idea to only take what you need for the day and keep the rest in the fridge.

Zug, I was told to keep them refridgerated when not using them. I only take out enough that I think I will use that day. I keep them in a snuff tin in my pocket and they get pretty active at that warmed up temperature. That will hasten their time to form cocoons then. That's why I only keep enough for the day in that tin. The rest of them are kept cold to slow the process. Wax worms are pretty much the opposite. They are suposed to be kept 60*-65* or they tend to get mushy.
Hope this helps.      Lou

Just bought a lot of 1000 Wax Worms.... the instructions that came with them said:  " Keep at room temperature for three (3) weeks , then refrigerate"  I followed those instructions to the letter and cleaned out the dead onews every four or five days..... only lost about 30 pieces in six weeks.
