Shaker on the last day....
« on: Mar 31, 2008, 05:31 AM »
Thanks to all who offered some suggestions for places to go yesterday between berwick and windham. My friend and I ended up on Shaker Pond. It was about 30 min for him and 35 min. for me so it worked out well. The flags were far from fast and furious but the weather was outstanding. I managed to bring 8 dead AA Batteries with me so no pics.... oh well. We did manage 6 or 7 crappie between us all about 10-11 inches. The last four came at the end of the day, when i decided I really wanted to finish off the rest of the bait before going home. Met a really nice guy out there who was doing pretty well with the crappie. We donated the only two we had iced at that point to him while he was filleting his. Other than the crappie we caught one small pickerel, last a really big crappie at hole, and had a lot of hit & runs and stolen baits. The other guy fishing near us was pulling out crappie on his traps that weren't much bigger than the bait! We tried to jig for some but didn't really have any crappie jigs, so that just proved to be some decent arm exercise and a way to pass the time.

All in all, not a bad day. We didn't end it on a skunk, I'd never caught crappie before yesterday, my friend had two firsts - crappie and pickerel, and we met a pretty nice guy who is pretty darn good at filleting a crappie and was willing to let me watch how he did it.

Thanks to all who helped end my 5 year drought going into the season and those that offered some advice to get me over my 4 skunks to start the season, and thanks to the guys who were willing to let me pick their brain about a bunch of local spots and just chat about them a bit. You all know who you are!

See you all on MFF!
