Be careful guys....I'm amazed on Lake Monroe though since the entire lake is only 3-4' deep at the deepest....I've walked across almost all of it throwing spinners

i heard the same report this morning on the way to work, stated, one man went through, a man and a woman tried to save him and they went though, one guy got out on his own but the other two had to be rescued by the fire department, all three are still in the hospital.

i have been watching the ice around the house and i would not go on it,  a lot of guys are talking about one more weekend, imo there are going to be more reports like this if people are still going like planned.

Greenwood was screwy all year....It just never froze well which is why I didn't even bother making the drive.

I got interviewed on the ice earlier today by 1 of the reporters from WBRE News and 1 of the questions she asked was did I hear about the ppl going through on Monroe and how do I stay safe...she learned 3" heels are not meant for wearing on the ice  ;)

The Marshalls Creek fire chief said last night that the rescue took much longer than expected because of a blocked road in the private community around the lake.

After the rescue was over, neighbors protested when the township tried to bulldoze the pile of gravel to clear the road.

Neighbors said the gravel was put there years ago to cut down on traffic through their private community.

People in the community are b***hing over some gravel when 3 people almost died because of it...**censored**?

actually the rescue took longer to be done because the morons protested the removal of a gravel pile that blocked the quickest way to the lake where the incident happened.  the pile of gravel was put there to keep people from using the road from neighboring community.  the people would not let them move and actually sat on the pile.

I wonder what would of happened if the guys that fell through would of died from hypothermia before they could be gotten to because of the people protesting the removal of the gravel.

That would of been on there conscience for the rest of there lives that a little dispute of road usage cost people their lives.

Luckily it did not though.

Amazing!!!!  Someones road is more imporant to people then someones life. I'm sure that the hump of gravel could have been replaced. Haven't heard nothing about how to replace a life yet!!  Maybe I'm more behind times then I think I am....Thank GOD they are safe!!!!

The gravel has been blocking the road for probably 5 years, this was the first life threatening issue that brought it to the headline.  There was not an attempt to remove the pile during the rescue, the fire chief asked the township to remove the pile after the incident because it suddenly became apparent how dangerous it was.  The people sat on the pile when the township showed up and the state police stopped the removal of the pile until someone can get a legal reading on the road block.  I wonder if the morons sitting on the pile realize that it takes emergency vehicles longer to reach them due to the pile?

If one of those 3 had died or suffer permanent damage due to delayed response as a result of that roadblock. Guess who would be paying the bill for that law suit!!! :P

hey ski, you never walked across that lake cause we were blown across it in that bathtub we fished out of that day and nearly got grounded dead center in the lake.  God, I have not been to Monroe since I think you and me hit it - we need to go try, the bathtub is chained up at the boat launch.  Yeah, i can't see how anone could go through on that lake and not get out - honestly, 95% of that lake is less than 4 feet deep.  Lots of perch in there though, may have bit on to them and treid to pull them under.

sorry i was just relaying what the news report was on WNEP 16.  they said the the gravel pile slowed the rescue attempts from the most direct route to the accident.  the rescues were made while crews tried to remove the pile, becuase they could not wait.

thats just what I seen on both 10:00 and 11:00 News broadcasts.

regaurdless of when the people protested about the pile it pretty stupid to impeed on the ability of local EMS to provide the public services.

Maybe it could of caost someone thier there house or maybe even there life.

i dont think that the depth of the water was the issue, rather it was the temperature.  4 ft of 32 degree water is the same as 400 ft of 32 degree water. hypothermia will set in, you would lose most of your motor functions and that would be that.

lucky they got out and everyone should be carefull anytime they are on the ice

That was a shameful display on the residents part. I have to deal with local (publically stocked) lakes. Residents do not wish to share the lake. Horribly selfish behavior.

The residents claim they had no clue a rescue was going on....Are they serious...the noise of numerous rescue vehicles is something you wouldn't realize or wouldn't think twice about...a fence is supposedly going to be erected...are you telling me no one in the entire community thought of that before? I think they just decided to take the cheap/ easy way out and dump a pile of gravel instead

Has anyone in that area written a letter to the editor decrying such shameful behavior. Their selfish act in putting a gravel pile in to prevent access to the lake galls me. I think that maybe, just maybe, they were getting too many fishermen going in at that spot. They probably parked at the best ice to get on the lake. As a result, just maybe those folks were forced to try to get on the lake by parking elsewhere and squeezing onto their precious ice over a dangerous/bad ice area leading to the disaster in the first place. Just speculation, but a logical deduction in my view. I need more facts on the incident in the first place.

It is speculation and a little flawed.  The road that was blocked connects Monroe lake and Tego Lake developments, people took this road as a short cut from Creek Road to Coolbaugh road and the residents of Tego lake blocked the road quite a few years ago to stop people from using it as a thoroghfare.  There have been letters written and aired on WNEP.  It was an unfortunate chain of events and hopefully things will get corrected now.

Could you please supply the name of the local newspaper? Also, from what you are saying, the gravel blocked only access from one road to another (a shortcut between roads), and not direct access to the lake. Also, is it verified that the residents prevented or hindered emergency personnel from getting to the rescue?

www.poconorecord.com would be your best bet for finding a write up

The gravel blocked the 2 seperate communities but would have been the fastest way for rescue personnel to access the lake...the time it took them to drive around could have made the difference between life and death for the 3 people who went in...

Residents went as far as sitting on top of the pile when it was being removed AFTER the rescue claiming they had no clue about anything happening which as I've stated, is just about impossible...rescue trucks tend to make lots of noise and that areas not exactly a loud area where you wouldn't notice it

What do you guys expect from a bunch of city slickers from NY or New Jersey? Par for the course if you ask me. It's (the people) the reason I never head to the Poconos for anything really (I live just outside of them, ugh).

The northern tier of PA is much more hospitable and a hell of a lot more peaceful.

People are the same all around the world. It has been my experience that many lakefront property owners are wealthier than the average Joe, and me. It has also been my experience that it is a bugger getting on any body of water due to the reluctance to share by the lakefront owners. I respect their home ownership and their right to peaceful existence on a lake or river. I wouldn't like a loud noisy crew in my backyard either. Anyone using a publicly stocked lake should respect their rights. However, whenever we are confronted with a situation such as this, it is our obligation to speak up. There is no reward, nothing will usually change and you will probably get a lot of flak for saying anything at all. However, you may be able to fortify the conviction of good people who were afraid to say something.
