WIRE LEADERS
« on: Feb 13, 2008, 08:48 AM »
QUESTION FOR ALL THOSE WHO PIKE AND MUSKY FISH!!!??!  IF I WAS TO CHANGE MY WIRE LEADERS TO 30LB TO 50LB BRAIDED LEADERS , COULD THIS BE A GOOD SUBSTITUTE FOR WIRE LEADERS. I FEEL THAT WIRE LEADERS SPOOK THE FISH AND KILLS THE SHINER QUICKER.

steel is real and if you loose a fish on braided you will never use it again.I've had 50 lb floro snapped like thread on the hook set.
but I did see dozindoug get a 19 lb pike on 20 lb mono or floro he had the patience of a saint to get her in and a little luck.

I rig my steel leaders by taking the snap swivel off and using a split ring to attach the hook (circle hook). The bait can swim more freely, and the circle hooks are equally effective.

YOU CAN ORDER TIEABLE LEADER SO THAT THERE IS NO SWIVEL.AND I HAVE 30LB TEST IT WORKED GOOD FOR THE 15 LBDER I GOT.OR GO TO DICKS IN THE FLY FISHING SECTION AND LOOK FOR A LEADER CALLED TOOTHY CRITTERS.ITS 10 FT LONG.FOR LIKE 4.99. ;)

I've always used wire.  Sevenstrand which is coated and most recently, titanium.  Titanium is much thinner but strong and doesn't kink.  Caught many on both.  I've had friends lose pike on mono and would not risk it.

I am experimenting with my deep sea gear and using 80 lb power pro as a leader....while I have only caught a 6 lb pike this year on it i saw no fraying or issues....i have a bag full of steel to use but want to see how it holds up...I'm thinking better presentation as 80 lb PP is the diameter of 16#mono....K

we'll see...

I was turned on to Terminator Titanium by some one and I am staying right there. No kniks and easy to work with. If you want to spend the money.

I use 60lb Fluoro Carbon Leaders. I have NEVER had one bitten in 2 or break. Here is why...

Fluoro-Carbon is a line and leader that is similar but not the same as the old standard monofilament. There are some substantial differences. Monofilament is actually nylon based derivative of glass that is molded and then stretched to a particular diameter and shape. This gives it its limpness and pound test characteristics.

Fluoro-Carbon is a hard polyvinylidene fluoride plastic that is formed with a process involving extreme heat and abnormally hazardous working conditions. Because this material is stiff and not porous like monofilament, it sinks faster and does not absorb water. This allows it to maintain its same pound test in nearly all fishing conditions. It has a hard and stiff quality, which would make it definitely undesirable as a casting line, but makes it extremely abrasion resistant as a leader.

Besides all of its other top qualities as a leader, the real secret to the success of fluoro-carbon is that its light refracting properties are much closer to that of water than standard monofilament. What this actually means is that to a fish it is less visible. On a day when the fish are "snapping up" everything in sight, fluoro-carbon may only provide you with a good quality leader that won't fail from abrasion or weaken with use. On a day where every single strike is critical, a less visible leader can mean the difference between a couple fish and no fish.

I agree.  If you are not going to break off a 34 inch Bluefish from the bottom of the canal, then a pike should be alright

Hmmm... Thanks Roncarr! I just read up about it based on your heads up. Looks relatively new ('07). I'll need to get some of these and try them out! It makes sense about the disapearing Pink! They are expensive but like anything else, you get what you pay for!

Thanks for the Lead    ;D

What he said only STEEL IS REAL !!!  It's a Chevy - Ford thing.....I'll always use steel (gator wire) but I say get out there an see what woks best for you.  My take is, particularly if you are using dead bait,  How much difference is the "presentation" going to make.  As one person put it, do you think that they can tell the difference between a thin piece of steel Vs. a thin piece of flouro but can't tell that the treble hook sticking out of the bait is bad for them?
