Cork Rings?
« on: Jan 25, 2008, 10:05 AM »
Looking for the cork rings that go on your reel of the tip up, to put your hook on.......I've bought them at LL Bean before....but I'd like to find some for an online order.  Anyone know where I can find them.....or maybe the right name for them?

It would be nice to buy the rings, but if you can't find them you can buy squares of cork at a craft store or Wal*Mart and make your own. I went to Wal*Mart and bought velco strips and put them around the reel.

I bought a set a long time ago at Dag's Bait Shop in Auburn, but after a few years the cold made them break apart. They weren't very thick to begin with, and didn't hold the hooks very well.

FWIW...  I've been using those thick rubber wrist bands that you see people wearing, and you can pick them up almost anywhere, (usually found at store checkout counters).
I've used the same ones for 2 years now, and they hold up well and do a nice job.
Are you SURE it's safe to walk on? Looks questionable to me!

a couple years ago I couldn't find em either so I used small pieces of cork cut from a sheet that I got at michaels craft store with Gorilla glue - they are still there but it doesn't look so good as the glue expands and has some ridges (but it did work) good luck finding the right ones I am sure it will look much better than my mickey mouse jobs

You can get them at Burnie's. I put them on my boys traps. The only problem with them is that they make the winding handle on the spool difficult to grab. For me anyways, I have sausages for fingers.

Ha, ha, ha....  (from the last post)  Beans is out of the 3" rings, was going to pick some up to replace worn out ones today on my jacktraps.  2" don't fit close to the rim.  Bands work well also as a previous poster mentioned.  Cork is always there though and you don't have to look for it at days end.  I just use glue, press the ring till it oozes out each side and smooth the glue with my finger.  Works for me!  Good luck finding them, sounds like a trip to Johnsons in Rockland for ya!
