Tip up spools
« on: Aug 02, 2010, 02:25 PM »
Hi all
Just wondering if anybody knew of a good place to buy tip up spools.  Would like to make 15-20 tipups for the boys and everywhere I look it says they are sold out for the year already.
Thanks

Doubt if they would be sold out for this year.. Just not stocked yet.. Still early for most retailers to be thinking about icefishing...You should be able to find them in a few months.. Yeah, I know..But not everyone thinks about ice the same way we do !!    ;D

You can get tipup spools from HT but I would stay away from the plastic spools as they break really easily. Fragile tipup spools don't do well around kids, traveling and basically the ice fishing enviroment. I had a few break (one in shipping even) so I made some of my own out of aluminum.

I machined those spools out of a solid chunk of 6061 and threaded them for the tipup shaft. Making them is time consuming and not cheap. ;)

Sometime I may look into investment casting some however they would have to be made here in the USA so they won't be the cheapest either. I won't go overseas to source anything.

I probably wouldn't want to part with the $$$  ---  It's always nice to have something self-made and what no one else has.  Great work on the spools.  I'm just envious.  ;D
