Ice Depth
« on: Dec 28, 2007, 04:35 PM »
OK, so I looked thru the topics and couldn't find what I was looking for. What is the best way to judge the depth of the ice and what is the general rule on how much ice you want before going out? I've heard four inches is the general safe depth but was looking to find out from some pros. I've always fished with a buddy that really knows what he's doing and am looking to set out on my own. Thanks.

take a spud bar or an axe and measuring stick of some sort, and just at the edge and carefully work your way out checking every couple of feet if the ice isnt  that thick.
good luck and stay safe

Not all ice is the same, so take that into account when measuring. Clear ice is the best(strongest) and is what this chart is based on.

You need to take into account the weight of snow cover on the ice too.

If your unfamiliar with the water try to stay on the traveled path. Some lakes have springs .There might be 6 inches in one spot and much less in another.

as sticks was saying, take a measuring stick, what i do is i have a yard stick with the top to a film container glued and nailed with a small finishing nail to the end. all i do is put the stick down the hole, pull up so that the lid is against the bottom of the ice and then i can read the lines without having to guess where the bottom of the hole is. just my $.02
