Ice Armor Glove Field Report
« on: Feb 11, 2007, 09:11 AM »
Well I decided to buy a pair of these in size x-large the fit is great and they are very warm, I use my gloves when dragging my shelter around on the ice and when my hands get cold and didn't have a heater with me. The other day I forgot the ice scoop and used the gloves to scoop out the ice chips. They are 100% water proof and still kept my hands warm, outside temp was 10 Deg. and with the wind chill -1 they didn't freeze to fast on the outside still flexible. Only draw backs I could see if your hands are slightly wet the inside lining will bunch up a little and the dampness takes longer for your fingers to warm up if the gloves are left on the floor of your tent both are my fault :-\ I would rate them 1-10 I would give them a solid 9 ;D

Just my two cents Tubby

I bought the Ice Armor gloves in XL from Gander Mountain a couple of weeks ago and have had them out three times.  Here's my review:

1st time out:  Temp was 0 degrees F, wind chill about -25 degrees.  I tested them thoroughly by scooping ice out with them, picking up every fish out of the hole (even dink perch), etc.  By the end of the day I was wearing huge ice cubes on my hands instead of gloves due to repeated insertion in water and removal to cold temps.  My fingers started to get really cold.  Wouldn't recommend at all for this kind of weather unless it's just to pull walleye or pike out of the hole and then put on other gloves.

2nd time out:  Temp was 10 degrees F, wind chill about 0 degrees.  They held up a little better but weren't as warm as my other insulated gloves.  After 3 hours I switched to regular Thinsulate gloves with a heater pack in each palm.  Wouldn't recommend for long periods of time in this weather.

3rd time out:  Temp was 20 degrees F, very little wind and sunny skies (good fishing weather in my opinion).  They worked GREAT!  No ice cube blocks on my hands, plenty warm, and no worries about perch spines in my hand when grabbing from the hole.  Scooped ice with them and everything.  Toward the end of the evening I stuck a heater pack in each one and I was toasty as the sun went down.  I would highly recommend the Ice Armor gloves in temps over 20 degrees F.

Hope this helps someone looking to make a purchase.

Bought a pair of ice armor gloves last year.  They absolutely suck!  I must have gotten the bum pair.  The minute any moisture gets on them it soaks through.  I would not recommend them, not for ice fishing at least.  They ended up becomming a very expensive pair of work gloves, great for laying brick!  I have the ice armor suit however and I am very satisfied with it.

Gotta agree with MacEnvy...  they're great at about 20 or above...  colder temps, especially when you get the gloves wet, your hands absolutely freeze...  and I wouldn't say they're all that waterproof..  bought mine at the beginning of the season, and they were okay for the first couple weeks.   after that, water was coming through everytime they got wet

The only ongoing equipment dilema I seem to have every year is what gloves to wear...  either they are not warm enough, they let water in, they're too bulky, etc...  can't seem to find one pair that is well rounded...  finally just settled on taking two or three pairs out at trip; that way I can switch them out depending on if they get wet/what I'm doing at the time...

Bought a pair last year and I think they are the best gloves I have used for ice fishing.  Lost one down  the hole this year,on land that is and really didn't care if they were water proof.

I own both the gloves and the mittens and would agree with the earlier reports - the gloves are great for moderate to chilly days (down to maybe 10 deg). The mittens however are another story - I have yet to find conditions where they have not performed to specs.

I tried them out - for $30.00 however they are not worth it - i have a pair of $10 soft leather gloves that i use for running the auger, pulling the house. As far as pulling fish - I typically fish inside some sort of shelter where i have my heater - so i usually do all that fun stuff bare hand and keep a dry cloth around and just warm up my hands on the heater - i do have a pair of deerskin gloves that are water resistant that i use for grabbing fish outside - never had a problem with water soaking through. And as far as scooping ice out of a hole with your gloves... i don't get it :) they sell scoops for pretty cheap - at 0 and below I'm not sticking my hand in the water unless its to save my a**.

I have the mittens and think they are the best mittens i have ever put on. I took them a few weeks ago with me to Alaska hunting in the arctic also. I have never dunked them in water though. great for running the auger, driving quad, sitting in deer stand, and so on. I usually just wear fingerless wool gloves while actually fishing. Don't know how anyone could fish with a full glove on anyway. ??? And if it gets that cold i will sit in the guide with a heater on
There is only one theory about angling in which I have perfect confidence, and this is that the two words, least appropriate to any statement, about it, are the words "always" and "never."

these gloves have there plueses and minuses...they work  great for everyday uses...shoveling snow, coming on and off the ice...but as for fishing, which is what they were made for, they are poor

The tips of the finger freeze up, super quick and make them usless, sure they are water proof, but what good is that if you can use the glove to feel anything as the tips are frozen solid

I bought the mittens last year and would agree with the previous posts. I feel that the mittens perform to specs. I have used them repeatedly for scooping fish and cleaning holes in below zero weather and have no leaks or issues with warmth. They are the best mittens I've had for quite sometime. JMHO they are worth the money. Sorry guys I don't know about the gloves.

I hate the gloves !!!!

but I love the mittens.

I bought both last season the gloves sucked,my fingers got cold quickly in them even in 20 degree temps.Finger dexterity was another issue with them and I hated the way they bunched up when trying to put them on with damp fingers.

The mittens on the other hand are great all around mittens, some of the best I have ever owned.Throw a heat packet in them and your hands will always be toasty warm, best part is the go on easily over damp hands and still keep your hands warm.

I bought a pair of mittens last winter, I hate to say this but they are terrible, all the inside cotton has shifted around leaving my fingers cold in places.  The lining will pull out if your hands are sweaty and they are only water proof for so long before it will seep in eventually.  I would have rather bought a couple pair of gloves to have one as a back up instead.

Ice armour has come out with a second generation glove and mitt, called to extreme(to go with the grey suit i suppose) They look more like sking gloves, with lots of flash on the outside, seem the same as the old models on the inside. retail at $45,  We have them in store at the Dicks in West Springfield, MA.

i'll be sticking with my old gloves and mitts.  With the combo of the 2 my hands stay warm all day.  I never stick my gloves in the water,  barehand all fish i catch, and dry them off in a towel before putting my gloves back on.  this seems to work for me.  I also make sure not to place my gloves on the ice, when they are not in use, i tuck them inside my coat to keep them warm.
