Installing a wood stove?
« on: Oct 17, 2007, 12:09 PM »
Hi Guys... This is my first post.  I'm in Minnesota... My Buddy of 26 years and I have been converting an old 12 foot camper into a fish house....

We've gone back and forth on the heating debate and came to the conclusion that we want to go with wood heat... Cheap and he and I have access to tons of wood year round.

We just order the Wood stove... 20" X 12" X 12" wood box, with a 5 inch hole for a pipe...

He claims "My Dad taught me everything we need to know about installing it."  But honestly... I'd like to be able to double check him as we go... And educate myself... Lurking on this site for the last couple of days, I can tell there is a real drove of guys here who really know there stuff.

My top questions/concerns...

1. How close can the wood stove & pipe be to the wall?

2. Any special reccomendations on heat shield I've always seen tin, but there were these aesbestos boards at Fleet Farm that caught my eye.

3. When it comes to the pipe anything special we should consider?

4. When it comes to the pipe going through the Ceiling and Roof, I have some concerns...

It's wood ceiling (That we're reinstalling) with a tin roof, that's been covered in a sheet of rubber... Do we simply wrap the pipe in 1 inch insulation and make a 7 inch hole through each layer, and call it good... Or is there more to it than meets the eye.

Thanks in advance!

I would strongly recommend finding honest to goodness 5" stove pipe...don't use galvanized hot air venting...
could kill you.  The galvy gives off poisonous gas when heated...at least initially.

Make sure you have good venting, either from the holes in the floor, or cracked windows/doors.  CO could kill you.

the stove (if new) should have recommended spacing from combustables
usually 24-36 inches-depends on the stove

u can use ceramic spacers to set your fire resistant board off the actual wall-leave a gap all the way around to promote air flow behind the FR Board

use stove pipe, and screw it together w/ sheet metal screws

threw the roof or wall...isolate the pipe from the cumbustables, an actual stove collar or metal to space it from the wood

remember heat drys wood slowly and brings it to a point where it gives of gases that allows it to free burn...pyrolysis.  not good for the shanty

CO is a concern

i have a smoke detector in my house, keeps an eye on things when i'm checking traps, like the eggs on the stove or my mitten that just fell on the stove, stuff like that

be safe, especially if you have kids in the shanty

We have a small wood stove in our shanty. We have it in a corner of the shanty and we have tin on the walls next to the stove. It works great.

My best friend converted an old travel trailer into a shanty and he has the stove to the left as you come in the door. Not much clearence btween the wall and the stove but with metal sheeting on the wall. He also has the stove going through the sheeting to the outside and then up. In the picture the up pipe is missing, it goes above the roof line with a cap for a good draft and clearence

In my 8X16 shanty I am currently building I plan to put the stove in the middle of the shanty with plenty of clearence and going up through the roof  with lined pipe and a metal pan or gypsum board under the stove.

This may seem like a good idea on paper, but once u get in there fishing
u will be kicking yourself. It maybe in the way, ull back into it,
burn ur pants, ur fishing line, melt ur bucket, there seems
to be just not enuf room when its in the middle of the shack.

Thanks for the advice and after thinking about it for awhile, I came to the conclusion that it would be easier to place it in the middle, against the long exterior wall. This way I would not have to put a hole in the roof and the pipe can go out the wall and up. I will get some metal for the wall to reflect the heat and a pan on the floor to catch the embers.
