How long will the ice last?
« on: Feb 19, 2007, 11:17 AM »
So far this year has been better for me in that i didn't have to go to NY to fish, but wih the temps getting up into the 40's starting tomorrow I wonder just how much longer we'll have safe ice. If we can go to mid March I'd be real happy.

I'm gonna take a guees for about 2 weeks into march, than it will start to get a little iffy but I'm sure people will push it for another week after that.

That's right.  It will last at least a couple more weeks, if no heavy rain comes.  Just getting into the 40's it still takes a long time to melt 8 or 10 inches or more of ice.  The rain is what kills it.  So far I haven't seen any forecast for heavy rain.

if i can get at least 3 more weekends i would be happy...the temps are still supposed to be in the teens and 20's at night so the ice will hand around for a while but the wild card is the rain.

Some of the lakes I have fished have any where from 12-18inches of ice and that should last a least 2-3 weeks depending on how cold we get at night.  Every where that had open water 2 weeks ago is gonna open back up quick!  Be safe and break out those planks so you can get to good ice!

What about on 6-8 inches of ice, like down here in central/ south jersey?  I just found some great weed beds on a great lake with some great crappie, bluegill, and perch.

We need at least 6" of ice to hold the derby. If you have 6-8" where you live you'll be fine. I've been out on 4.5" once this year, although I prefer at least 6", some guys say 4" is plenty. Just be careful and test drill holes as you go if you're not sure of the ice thickness

I dont have a problem getting on ice, I am risky.  I just can't reach the ice on some lakes.....it melts by the shore due to rain run off and warm weather.  I will have to use the waders to get on the ice.

Good news guys, I think were gonna be okay for at least a couple more weeks.  Eveything here at Aeroflex has stiffened back up and there is anywhere from 7-18 inches of good ice.  The weather forecast looks mild during the day but cold enough at night to keep the ice good.  Keep your fingers crossed and hope we don't get rain on Sunday night, rain always weakens the edges here and you need a plank to get on the ice.  Hope every body enjoys there weekend and has alot of tight lines!

I agree with you..especially based on accuweathers 15 day report..yes i know it seems like it changes every day but based on what i see i will get my wish and get out at least as late as March 11th. Anything after that would be a bonus in my opinion.

I look at it this way; any day we get out in March is a plus especially since the ice came so late this year.  It's been along time since I have seen ice last to April, but thats okay, cause trout season is coming!  Enjoy the hardwater while we can! ;D
