Clam Yukon or Shappell dx 2.0
« on: Dec 07, 2006, 12:33 PM »
Could use some help!  I want a shanty that is easy to pull (I've got heart problems)  and can handle 2 people
What shanty would you buy?  The trap Yukon or the Shappell DX 2.0?  Yukon= $500    DX 2.0= $350
Or would you buy a trap GUIDE for $300?

Do any of you have these products and if so what do think?

I have the Shappell DX 3000 and love it.  It is easy to set up, but not as mobile as the Trap.  However, you can easily stand up to stretch your legs if needed with out getting out of the shelter.  You can't do that with the traps.  I have a bad knee and need to stand every 30 mins or so.

It is very light and easy to pull on ice or thin snow cover.  When the snow gets deeper, it tends to dig in.  Plus, although it has bucket spots molded into it, it is tough to carry gear other than buckets on it.  I bought an Otter sled.  The shelter fits nicely on top and it also protects the gear in the sled.  I pull it by hand and behind a snowmobile.

You should be able to find a DX 3000 or 2000 for much less than $350.

I have a F.Trap~Yukon and love it.I will admit it can be a little tough to pull for one guy if you have it loaded down with gear~As I do!...Especcially if there is much snow on the ice.....Not sure about the Shappell 2.0 but they make pretty decent shanty's.....peshewa

Drakegunner, Like Mack said, I also have the Dx3000 that I use when I have a buddy go with me. I bungee it on top of a Jet sled in which I store all my gear. I have a set of cross country skiis attached so it pulls real easy. Hope this helps.   Lou

Just picked up a 2 person HT Polar Escape Magnum, It is on sale at Basspro.com right now for 199, then you can put the Extra $$ toward something else.

I own a Shapple and a Fish Trap Guide, and the guide is higher quality and more comfortable for my money. Also if you have issues pulling stay away from the Yukon(120lbs) and go with the guide (80lbs).

Thank you for the help.  The shappell I was looking at is the new Rover 2.0 DX (sorry about the confusion) it appears as big as the yukon, but is the weight of the guide.  It does have a bench seat, instead of bucket seats.

Do any of you guys have experience with shappell flip-over styles?

I have nothing to say about the Shappell 2.0 as I have never even seen one up close. But I can speak of the Clam Yukon as I just purchased one and put it together last weekend. Used it just once and love it. It is a little heavy to pull through the woods uphill ( Canadice lake N.Y. ) full of gear. Great quality and fit of parts in assembly as well as good directions. Lots of room for my son and I plus all of our gear. Lots of room for four jigging holes vex and aqua view holes with a buddy heater in the mix as well. Thought about getting the jump seat for a third seat but I feel it would make it a little snug. Great 2 person sled. The sled transport cover is a must have so don't be cheap if you choose a Yukon.
If you have no clue what you are doing just buy more gear and try to look the part.
