Smelt on Tip-ups
« on: Feb 01, 2007, 09:25 AM »
Do any of you use dead smelt on tip-ups. I've got a couple bags full of smelt in the freezer and was curious if any of you guys use these. I've only used live suckers and shiners. Will LG mouth bass bite on these? Or just pike and muskie? I'll bet the catfish would eat them up. Any suggestions or observations are welcomed. FC

Dead smelt would likely work for pike i would guess, its one of my favorite baits for pickerel so i wouldnt doubt pike would take them to.
Theres only 3 seasons..open water, hunting and icefishing!

I've had great luck with dead smelt for lakers and pike.  I don't fish much for bass but it's an easy meal,  should work fine when the bite is on.  I keep smelt alive all winter and when they die I freeze them.  So every now and again I fish dead bait for the day.  Give a try, You may be surprised.
IF YOU DON'T GO, YOU WONT KNOW!!!
