Anyone ever repaired the threads where the tank screws on?

Good luck with that. Steel thread on cans vs brass threads on heater when cross-threaded =  stripped mess.

I know of no way to recut inner threads on a big piece like that, and I've done a lot of rethreading/cutting new threads with tap and dies. Maybe you could find a Helicoil that big; I dunno if that would work on there. Best thing in the future is what I've done: I always put a drop of lube on those threads, or on the can if they look rusty, and screw it on while tipped on side to be able to see that it's going in straight. Good luck.

Oh man.how would you screw the tank on cross threaded or wAy to tight to begin with?a huge thread chaser wont work because the propane open valve would be in the way.

Time to order a new part is the only way, IMO.

X2 on the replacement. Not really a connection you want to be questionable about. I would order the new part and be done with it.

Finally, a sensible answer!  ;D

Long time habit on machine screwing things: Turn counter clockwise until the screw "clicks" into place then proceed to fasten. That click is the threads aligning and once you're there you're not likely to cross thread anything ever again. No guarantees against cross dressing however.
