Run and Gun Heater Set-Ups
« on: Feb 15, 2021, 09:14 AM »
With the onset of the outrageous 1lb disposable propane can prices, and scarcity of the refillable flame king 1lb cans, I decided to buy an 11lb tank.

I had been lugging around a 20lb tank most of the season now, with buddy heater and hose set-up. This is awesome when setting up a big shack for the day and not moving, but when it's just my wife and I we like to move around. The disadvantage for me when trying to pick up and move is the buddy heater/hose/tank combo is pretty cumbersome if left hooked up, and if disconnected you waste more time reconnecting and purging the line to get the heater going again. I picked up a Mr. Heater single 10-15K BTU tank topper to put on the 11lb tank for the intention of having a faster heating system when moving around.

What is everyone else doing? On the Facebook forums I've seen a couple milkcrate set-ups that look neat, but again take up more space than I'd like. Just curious to see how the rest of you are "skinning this cat"  ;D

I use this Latern Box, when its above 20 degrees.  Gives me the freedom to cut and run.

Never used a heater. Just dress appropriately.  Thinking about adding a heater this year for below zero days or setting up in the pop up (also new this year).

Still undecided on travel light- no heat, no shelter, stay home if it's bad weather. Vs shelter, heat, more stuff to haul, more time setting up and less time fishing.  Much above 10 degrees or so I'd rather not mess with a shelter.

Unless it's windy.  I can deal with cold.  Wind, not so much.

Run and gunning I don't mess with the heater, drilling and moving keeps me plenty warm usually.  I only turn on the heater to take the chill off, heat up a cup of coffee or a meal.

I run this. it is a little buddy heater that uses the one pound tanks but instead of using them I made an adapter to put it on my 5 pound tank. I could even hook it to a 20 pound tank if I wanted too :

Five lb tank in a milk crate.  It fits perfectly.  When it's time to move, put the heater and crate in sled with hose still hooked up.

I’m one of the fortunate ones that has the flame king 1 pounders. Cheap and easy to fill for me. L&M fleet supply shows that they still have 1lb in stock.

so this is what you could use to make the adapter. put Teflon tape on the joints to help prevent possible leaks :

this is a little different then the one I used when I made mine (mine didn't have the hand wheel) :

next part is the elbow :

then the 6 inch Brass Nipple :

And Finally the male throw away cylinder end fitting :

here is the Teflon Tape :

I still use these 2 for several decades for run and gun ,but they have no oxygen sensor, so a little air flow is required ,

the old lantern box is the ticket as stated.  i have never used a heater.  i just stay home when its below 0*.  above 0* no need.  setting in a warm shack just makes it feel that much colder when you go out. imo

I took a little Road Pro electric and clipped it off near the plug. I now run it off a little flasher Battery.
