Getting Line from Spool to Reel...
« on: Jan 07, 2007, 09:17 AM »
I have heard from a few people that when spooling a reel with new line, that the spool should be flat with the label facing up as you are reeling it on.  The argument is that manufacturers put the line on the spool in a specific direction (clockwise I think) so that when you do put it onto a reel (using this method), it will stay tight and not get kinks, and won't unravel.

Anyone have any opinions on this?

I have heard this as well, although I also heard that if the line twists when putting on this way, you need to turn the spool over.

I have heard and read the same thing. If your reel cranks clockwise you would want your line coming off the spool counterclockwise right? :%$#!:

Follow the manufacturers recommendation! I have Shimanos that work both ways.

I usually buy Berkley's line and they do have "instructions" on how to spool the reel.

You know, I've never noticed instructions, but at the same time, I've never looked  ???
Guess I'll have to do a better job of paying attention next time... :P

Always start with the label facing up. Fill the spool partway and stop, checking for line twist. If twist occurs, flip the spool and repeat  ;)

This has been my experience...Look at the spool and the reel..if the line goes on the reel clockwise then it needs to come off of the spool counter clockwise and vice versa irregardless of wether the label is up or down.
It seems that reel and line manufactures can not come up with a set standard to go by.

you can put it on any old way as long as when your done you hold thr spool under HOT water from the sink for about 30-45 sec.  I Use an old coat hanger thru the center so i dont scald myself. No twist, no run offs, no memory..
NO PROBLEMS!!
Lack of planning on your part in NO way constitutes an EMERGENCY on mine

Tried this with the pike reel (20lb test) and it really seemed to help.

If you are using 1-3 # line be a little careful. My water heater is set at 150 deg and that is a little hot. I've heard the heat over 140 can damage flocarbon coatings.        ( from a friend of a friend of a friend) works excellent for me. I never can figure out what way to turn and flip then flop it, and it still twists.
