Anyone ever have a ion battery go bad?
« on: Dec 19, 2020, 10:07 AM »
Three years ago I bought a new xc5 battery for my ion. Took it out last night tried to charge it and the charger just blinks red and after 15-20 minutes of charging the battery was showing one red bar on the indicator. I tried the original battery on the charger and it charged fine. Paid 199.00 dollars for it at beans. To bad they changed their policy. Just wondering if anyone in here has experienced this before and or what my options are besides throwing it away.

Not an owner of the auger. What does the battery do if you leave it charging all day? How many charges has it had?

Has had a bunch of charges. Between 20-30 each year I've owned it. Left it on for an hour just blinks red on the charger itself. The battery indicator when pressed showed 1 red bar instead of the normal green. Yes both batteries sit all summer, the original battery is 5 years old and functions properly.

If a battery is discharges it can freeze and ruin a battery pretty quickly, charged batteries won't freeze. Possible explanation, but all batteries eventually go bad.

My buddy had one of the original ion batteries go bad a couple years back. He contacted ion and they helped him out. I had a bad set of 10” blades right outta the box. Ion sent me a new set free of charge.

Looks like they have a warranty ..3 years ..so fire off an Email and/or call/FB Message them . My recent experience with various customer services has gifted me with faunistic service/resolutions . There are some YouTube videos on lithuim batteries you could explore concerning dead batteries if all else fails.

Sounds like a weak or bad cell that may have reversed polarity or bms can't handle such a low voltage from one or more cells.

If you can get the individual cells or weak cell to charge up to a higher voltage, the bms should be able to take it over. Or, bypass the bms to temporarily charge the group of cells, but not over charge them.
Maybe another user has made a video showing how to do that on you tube.

https://batteryuniversity.com/index.php/learn/article/low_voltage_cut_off

https://html.duckduckgo.com/html/?q=how+to+reset+a+bms+on+ion+battery&t=fpas

Give Matt a shout from amped outdoors and see what he recommends. He may be able to tell you how to reset the bms or rebuild the unit with fresh cells.
He is a member here also and a sponsor. Last I heard, he is super busy.

Just watched some you tube videos on how to bring them back to life. Basically make jumper cables and get juice from the old battery that still works into the new battery that doesn't. Basically says the bad battery dropped below a certain level and now the charger wont recognize or charge it until I get it back to a certain working level. Reluctant to try dont want two pooched batteries. I guess they do it with power tool batteries all the time. May just be time for a replacement auger and sell this one.

Try the warranty route first.

Try the warranty route first.

And boycott ll bean ;) crazy to think they try and sell high end fly rods (400-600$) without telling you they won’t back it.

My battery did this last year.  Just kept blinking red when on the charger.  Result was battery was too cold.  After a day inside near the heat, it started charging fine.  Hope this helps.
