Do Travel Covers Stay On?
« on: Dec 02, 2020, 07:56 AM »
After holding out for years saying I would never sit in a dank damp portable I bought one last year and love it!!! I think insulated fabric made a huge improvement to portables. I haven’t traveled far with it and am asking- Do the covers stay on in a truck box or trailer? How much securing do they need?

Good question. I would hope they would stay on but it is a hit and miss depending on how secure you make it.

Guess it would depend how snug the fit is. When I used one I put a bungee cord over it just to be sure.

Always have a truck bed cargo net thingy over the stuff in the open truck bed.  Well at least one corner is actually tied down rather than just the bungee with hooks.

Mine is an Otter cover made for the house and seems pretty tight. It’s just too much $’s to not have to stop for if it does blow off.

Mine do. I have a Clam X300 and Clam Blazer and covers on both.

Please note that I either haul by human trudging (VERY slow) or by Snowdog (fairly slow) and that my covers do not see the speeds generated riding behind a fast snowmobile.

I am sure that speed changes things.

That’s my question Wall E, one or 2 straps? Bungees? Mines all elastic, no tightening rope to pull tight. Seems a simple question but if I leave the seats up and the sled full of stuff it seems like straps or bungees might actually pull the cover off. Am I way overthinking this?

My 1 man Blazer is all elastic too. But I trudge slowly and it is no problem.

If your cover has no cinch around perimeter I would do as others suggest bungee it down. I fold my chair backs down and still have rod case heater finder tackle etc in tub of flip with my cover on it. I have the actual Eskimo Cover designed for the Sierra so it fits good and has a perimeter cinch that keeps it held down. didn't tighten the cinch rope once and it was flaring pretty good in the wind going down road in truck, pulled over tightened it up and that kept it in place no problem. Bungee it down and keep the air from gettin up under it and it should stay in place fine even if you do leave the seat backs up and more gear piled on top.

I bungee mine down regardless. Most of my traveling is in the dark to get where I want to go, so riding in the back of truck was a constant worry of if and when. Plus moist roads I travel are not plowed as often as highways, so they are a bit bumpy from time to time due to packed snow and ice. I would have hated to pull up to my favorite spot in the dark and find out that the $60 cover was gone along with whatever else may fly out going down the bumpy road. But each to their own.... Some co-workers actually installed d-rings on their sleds for cinching and bungee and they use the same points for anchoring their flip-over on the ice (high winds). Thought that was a great idea and have done the same to mine.

Food for thought....

Snitch

I don't have pictures. You can get the d-rings from Home Depot, Lowe's Harbor Freight or any Hardware store. D-ring size i used was 1 1/2. I used 1/4x20x1-inch bolts with fender washers for the inside of the sled and matching 1/4x20 nylon nuts. I put the D-rings about 7-inches up from the ground on my tub and at about 1/4 of the sled length from the ends (you may have to decide different locations on your tub/sled). No big plate on the inside. The guys have had their flip overs anchored down in winds up to 70 mph and didn't have much problem aside for set up and take down in those conditions.

my Wild Outdoors flip over shelter spends all winter in the back of my truck and after 3 seasons I still have the cover. The cover never gets tied or bungeed, the only thing attached to the sled is the winch cable that pulls it into the back of my truck.

On the high way I leave seats down and put a couple bungee cords on or cam lock straps for 5-$7.00 each
, far as pulling with snowmobile I don’t

get a pair of adjustable flat bungies from wallmart, they work wonders for straping stuff down for ice fishing, and the cord is always the perfect length. I use them on all my sleds. I use two on my shack and it holds it great. I personally won't travel my shack with out a pair of locking bungies. GOod luck, for a 5 dollar investment why not toss two on.

When going down the hwy in the back of the pickup I use six spring clamps to clamp the cover to the edge flange on the sled. Quick and easy to put on and take off, and they never tangle up with other gear like straps or bungees do.
Any day on the ice with little to no wind, is a darn good day.

My otter lodge has an otter cover that fits great and while I doubt it would go anywhere I still bungee it if it's on the trailer.
