SHANTY"S
« on: Oct 27, 2006, 08:44 PM »
Hi all, just wondering if anyone has some idea's on building shantys.  It's time to build a new one hoping you could help me out on brainstorming idea's.  I'm looking to go 8x8ish but i want somthing i can take down at the end of the year and throw in the back of my halfton, but still able to take the punishment of the lake.  Those trailer type shacks look like they might be the ticket too but i donno.  Any idea's would be greatly appreciated.  BRING THE ICE!! it's coming soon!!, thanks.

just a tip from "been there, done that"......make whatever you want 6' x whatever.....if you build a permanent on skids that you want to move around, this width follows plowed and vehicular traffic.....8' doesnt cut movement when dragging ice or roads.....good luck....cause there's tons of great ideas on the Ice Shanty Tips board right here....Grump

The Grumpy one is correct. We had a collapsable we made on Mission.
The bottom was bolted to skids and the top was bolted to that.
The walls were all bolted together with 6 inch carrage bolts.
When unfastened it slide into the truck box, like butter.
6x4x6 high. 4x4s for skids. 2x2s for the frameing.
6x6 will work with the new trucks. set it on 2x4s in the box.
Any plywood will work for the walls, wieght is the issue.
The floor needs to be 2x4 and 5/8" for strength.

here's how I built mine
6'x8'--on 2x6 runners floor joists are 2x4, 16" on center
Single pitch roof: 7' in front 6' in back
2x2 upright stud frame 2' on center luan skinned
Here's the kicker:
Chop that baby at 4' high
now you have sections that bolt together (2x2 meets 2x2--carriage bolt and nut through each framed division) at 4' height and each corner (upper and lower sections)
roof: 2, 6'x4' sections on 2x2 square frame--supported by a pair of 2x2's that run the length screwed to ends--rigid foam held in place by those 2x2's in the ceiling
Front is the only different part--2 3'x7' high sections either side of a 7'x2' door
45 degree corner braces all around and at ceiling (compound miter saw helps w/angles)
Goes together at access in about 45 min w/3 guys and can be towed by snowmobile/atv/car (if enough ice)
rigid foam fits nicely in framed sections and propane keeps it toasty
the real bonus:
FITS IN MY SUBURBAN!!!!!!
cuz i don't have a trailer
p.s. I scavenged all matl's and paid under $ 50.00 for the whole thing--I was amazed at what I could get my hands on at job sites
good luck and Post a pic when you're done

Here's some pics of mine added 2/10/07 with the "chop"

The employment of effort, hard work, time, and energy put in locating fish will offend noone.
