Although I don't live in Maine, I visit the Casco Bay region several times a year. I like snakes and make a point of looking for them with my boys. Of the nine species of snakes in Maine, I have found seven, once actually finding all seven in one day.
The two species I have not seen in Maine are black racer and watersnakes. Black racers are rare in Maine so no surprise I haven't seen one.
Really surprised I still haven't seen a watersnake though. We stay on a freshwater pond with lots of marsh around it that looks like it should have them but in 20+ years, never saw one.

Odd ice fishing topic. What triggered that?

Snow snakes make tracks in snow everywhere. But they look just like mouse tunnels  so it hard to indemnify  which is what.  Most of the other snakes I've seen are Garter, Milk adder,  green snakes , My great Grand father killed the last Rattle snake seen in Maine . Rattlesnake mnt. Casco. in the 1800s

As a kid I used to catch water snakes down on the Credit River in Mississauga Ontario.
Biggest I ever caught was about 6 feet long. Was fun to do on those hot summer days. :)

Poor watersnakes, they get such a bum rap. They don't bother anyone and certainly don't deserve to be killed.
Me and my boys like them. They come out of hibernation quite early, especially in mild winters like this one. These are from past years, 2013 I think. You can see snow on the ground in the last one where he is holding a garter snake.

I use to feed them the small sunfish and perch I catch. The snakes near one of the boat launch I use seem to be use to that from local kids too, as they poke their heads out when ever someone is fishing at the launch.

Snow snakes are exceptionally rare here in Montana, and yet I have been bitten by a few. VERY dangerous. Only known remedy for the venom is a quick double shot of Jim Bean Black Label followed by several more over the next few hours. Works miracles!

i see quite a few at south slang hawkins area also otter creek. i though they would be aggressive if you tried to catch them. i just leave them alone.
