Will a flasher pick up a cusk on the bottom?
« on: Sep 14, 2006, 09:33 PM »
I was just curious... many threads that I've read say that flashers can pick up bottom hugging perch, etc?  Does this mean right on bottom or suspended a few feet off?  Just picking folks brains... any info would be appreciated.

Never fished for cusk with the vex but I know for sure that it will pick up bottom hugging perch ;)

Like FK said the bottom will grow or you'll get that little flicker on the bottom. Depends a lot on bottom make up also. Muck, bog, boulders or rocks can make it very difficult to spot them if they are inactive. One way of how to find this out for sure is to use an underwater camera and you'll see exactly what's happening by watching the flasher when a bottom hugger comes in on the camera. This is one of the most enlightening things I have seen using the camera.

Just don't be confused when the wind is blowing and your transducer is bouncing around a bit.  That will give you "false bottom movement" too.    :o

Even if its a false read on the vex i fish a little harder. When ya get that line flickering on the bottom it raises hope. The burbot may also mark better than the panfish due to size.
The new flashers really work well!

A flasher may not pick up a cusk, but a flasher should have no problem picking up a hooker in downtown Anchorage :P!

I disagree

Ive picked up a  few "fish" on the bottom sitting there and dropping a jig or a shiner write on it too not get anything- sometime the branch or structure will hoover just like a fish, sometimes its possibly a fish that just wont bite

not in every situation it wont pick it up. If there is a rock or some weeds which makes true bottom different the flasher bottom. But I have caught a lot of perch which never showed on the flasher. But I fish lakes with rocky bottoms. Doesnt matter which flasher, fish can still out dumb them. Be honest, a fish isnt going to outsmart a rock, so he has to try something else.

Yup, it sure will!
