Ice Shanty Mobile App
« on: Nov 13, 2019, 06:44 AM »
Does anyone know if there has ever been any attempt to create a mobile app for Ice Shanty?  I find using the site via my phone to be pretty clunky and would like to get something a bit easier to use, especially when I'm out on the ice.

Or is there a generic mobile app that can wrap around the message boards?

Admins:  Do you have anything in flight for this type of capability?

Users:  Anybody have a homemade solution?

Terrible idea!!

 :o  :o  :o  :o

The nefarious tech giants would certainly include "Spyware" inside the app that would collect the GPS readings and use AI to review the fish photos and all fishing activity to determine the best fishing spots in every state/province.

Then, the entire crew of Ice Shanty would look up - surprised to be caught at our favorite secret spot and see...

Jeff Bezos and Zuckerberg decending from helicopters in ice shanty mansions.

They have a support team installing a grid of Livescopes every 100' that are networked to provide real time feedback of the activity of every fish on the lake.

Their goal is obvious, to suck the lake dry.

No app for me, I can see where it leads.  ::)

Where would one find the option to switch?

I'd say I use my phone to look at ice shanty 85% of the time.  I've noticed on the mobile you don't see people's location listed under their username like you do on the desktop version.

I'm not really familiar with mobile development but this doesn't seem like it would be a monumental task.  Would be cool to have the capability - at the very least there is probably a much more elegant way to get pictures and video's uploaded.

So while you are out fishing you want to be able to check the website, and maybe post about your trip in live-time?

I thought the reason many of us go fishing was to get away from the tech world, to effectively "unplug" from it.

I guess now people NEED to be in constant contact with their favorite apps and sites, updating their every action so that the rest of the fishing world knows exactly what you are doing every second you are on the ice?

Why bother hitting the ice? Why not just sit at home and watch all the videos from all the other like-minded individuals?
Oh, wait, they won't be there either, they'll all be home watching their phones and bragging about the last time they caught a fish....

If you NEED to bring your phone so you can go online to check a website about what you are supposedly doing on the ice, you need to stay home and leave the fishing to those that came to fish. Maybe you can find a few million funny cat videos while you're waiting???

I don't think that my desire to share information with fellow anglers or see how they are doing when I have a slow day in some how demeans how I spend my time out of doors - regardless of if my approach is different than yours or anybody else's.  it's crazy because I also listen to music sometimes when I'm out, or sit in a shanty with a heater and I even have a drop of beer on occasion.  We all do it differently, no reason to be disdainful of how others enjoy their time on the ice...especially if it doesn't impact you.

For a COMPLETELY different approach on "to App or not to App," the lakes I fish on have no cell coverage at all.

An App wouldn't really change anything.

To update anybody, and especially my pals on Ice Shanty, I need to get back to the cabin and the connection there.

I remember when ice fishing use to be about chiseling a hole with a pick while wearing a seal skin parka and a handline, now you cant leave home without your power auger, spinning reel, heater and electronic graph. Cant you leave that crap at home? Youre taking away from the experience. You might as well set nets at this point.

Stay off the ice if youre using all that crap and let the REAL ice fisherman fish. I bet you drive a truck or sled to the lake too, can't you just use a dogsled like a real MAN? Pathetic.

Philip,

I did set nets for whitefish this year, and it was pure misery.  Made ice fishing seem downright tropical.

Also, I must not be very gifted at netting because I catch more ice fishing.

I think an app is a good idea. I agree that viewing the site on a phone is very clunky for me, and a dedicated app could make it much better.

I do want to be clear that this has nothing to do with using this on the ice. I’ve never used the site while on the ice. I’m sure most people haven’t. I’m talking about just using it day to day, at home, work, etc. Somehow this topic veered off into whether it’s ok or not to use a phone/app/electronics out on the ice.

Well said! ^^^

I'm not against an app or the use of it.
But come on... does anyone need to be using their phone for anything other than calls and pics when you are fishing?
I see more cellphone zombies, people that are mentally attached/addicted to their phones than I care to and have to avoid as many while driving the roads, so is it a bad thing to not want to see similar "zombie/addicts" on the ice as well?

Here's something to consider...how many fish will you miss because you are looking up something on your phone?
What if you bring a child along, and while you're "distracted" they get hurt, break something, lose something or wander off?

Sure, these are "worse-case" scenarios, but no one ever thinks it could happen to them...until it DOES.

Ok, enough soap-boxing for the day/week.

To be fair, maybe it will have to be decided/determined by the user as to what they consider is enough.

Hey, at least we can all agree that we're all getting fresh air and are engaging in some physical activity? That and catching fish is what it's all about!

I’m not that into the tech stuff my self that much but I would think a private snap chat thing or insta gram thing would be easy enough just have to connect some how for user name and password to transfer over for access. Maybe them geeks in the frostbite videos could do it. Nothing against frostbite but they choose some special ones ask spokesmen.

What kind of issues do you guys have accessing the site with a phone?

I use my phone exclusively for accessing IceShanty and haven't hit any stumbling blocks along the way. Posting photos and links is easy enough.

I will admit, I just learned I could click on the little orange NEW next to the post title and be brought right down to the first post that's new since I last viewed the thread. That's pretty nifty.

Agree. Works with out a hitch. Just set up favorites in whatever browser you use to quickly access all the parts of iceshanty you frequently access. It cant get any easier.

For example on an Iphone, if you are in  the native browser and you tap the address bar, all your favorites appear, just make favorites for the different sections of shanty you like and then u just need to tap on them. I have one for new replies, for general chit chat, and one for each Montana page. As well, you can also make bookmarks. EZ PZ. DM me if you need help ( with Iphones anyway lol)

Boy howdy! Looks like we all need some ice! As far as using a phone while I am ice fishing, I call home when I am going on the ice, setup, home base knows where I am at, and if I am going to stay out longer cause the fish are hitting I will let them know. I don’t have an issue with folks using their phones, laptop, listening to their tunes. When I go out mainly I want to get into the moment. Know that is trite, to bad. I guess where I am coming from is this. I have an app  on my phone that allows me to make phone call! Reckon that is all I need! ;)
