Fly the Team Iceshanty Flag! Iceshanty Proshop
Terrible idea!! The nefarious tech giants would certainly include "Spyware" inside the app that would collect the GPS readings and use AI to review the fish photos an activity to determine the best fishing spots. Then, the entire crew of Ice Shanty would look up - surprised to be caught at our favorite secret spot and see...Jeff Bezos and Zuckerberg decending from helicopters in ice shanty mansions to suck the lake dry.No app for me, I can see where it leads.
I pretty much look at iceshanty from my phone now these days..no problems.im running the older version of it though.i didnt like the new format.
So while you are out fishing you want to be able to check the website, and maybe post about your trip in live-time?I thought the reason many of us go fishing was to get away from the tech world, to effectively "unplug" from it.I guess now people NEED to be in constant contact with their favorite apps and sites, updating their every action so that the rest of the fishing world knows exactly what you are doing every second you are on the ice?Why bother hitting the ice? Why not just sit at home and watch all the videos from all the other like-minded individuals? Oh, wait, they won't be there either, they'll all be home watching their phones and bragging about the last time they caught a fish....If you NEED to bring your phone so you can go online to check a website about what you are supposedly doing on the ice, you need to stay home and leave the fishing to those that came to fish. Maybe you can find a few million funny cat videos while you're waiting???
I remember when ice fishing use to be about chiseling a hole with a pick while wearing a seal skin parka and a handline, now you cant leave home without your power auger, spinning reel, heater and electronic graph. Cant you leave that crap at home? Youre taking away from the experience. You might as well set nets at this point. Stay off the ice if youre using all that crap and let the REAL ice fisherman fish. I bet you drive a truck or sled to the lake too, can't you just use a dogsled like a real MAN? Pathetic.
I think an app is a good idea. I agree that viewing the site on a phone is very clunky for me, and a dedicated app could make it much better. I do want to be clear that this has nothing to do with using this on the ice. I’ve never used the site while on the ice. I’m sure most people haven’t. I’m talking about just using it day to day, at home, work, etc. Somehow this topic veered off into whether it’s ok or not to use a phone/app/electronics out on the ice.
Philip,I did set nets for whitefish this year, and it was pure misery. Made ice fishing seem downright tropical. Also, I must not be very gifted at netting because I catch more ice fishing.Gunflint
I remember seeing you post this, wild stuff. but... motorized boat? Psh.. back in my day dad would make me hold onto the back of the boat and flutter kick to all the nets! you youngins have it easy!
What kind of issues do you guys have accessing the site with a phone? I use my phone exclusively for accessing IceShanty and haven't hit any stumbling blocks along the way. Posting photos and links is easy enough. I will admit, I just learned I could click on the little orange NEW next to the post title and be brought right down to the first post that's new since I last viewed the thread. That's pretty nifty.
