Floors for hub houses
« on: Nov 08, 2019, 02:30 PM »
Does anyone know if one of those  cheap blue tarps opened up in a hub house would work as a decent barrier between the ice and your feet.I ordered a hub house and I'm looking for ideas for floors. Any comments or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.Thanks.

Yes it will work.  However the tarp doesn't lay flat flat.  If you're okay with that.

Otherwise there's plenty of mats and bed liners that will work too.  I use those foam connecting mats for exercise flooring.

A blue woven polypropylene tarp will be no match for your Kahtoolas or whatever you've got strapped to your feet. Sure you really need a floor or just want one?
We're born, we live for a while, and then we die.  Sounds like a good reason to go ice fishing.

I like Baffin boots and no floor. Less stuff to carry.

ICE!!!!
If you have cold feet, get a better footwear system!!!!
If I can handle -40 with a poly pro liner and merino wool over sock in a pair of Bunny's you can too.

A piece of old conveyor belt works great for a foot mat

which brand hub house did you order. did you look at any of the Clam hub houses. the Clam X400 & X600 & Jason Mitchell 5000 have a floor you can add to them. Clam also offers floors for select sled based houses this year too.

Depends how much time or money you want to invest but...You could get a large sheet(s) of 1" styrofoam (4' X 8'), cut to size needed, then cut in half. Glue a piece of 1/4 or 3/8 plywood/osb on each half of foam...hit the bottom side with someThompsons or the like. Attach hinges to plywood to enable folding in half for easier carry and transport. Get some scrap carpeting and glue to other side of foam halves. I did this when I had a hub style shanty and it worked great.

Get a little snow or ice a tarp like that it would be terribly slippery. As mentioned cleats would perforate the tarp with holes and begin to look like my underwear. I use small rubber backed rugs to get my feet off the ice. They work for me and are less hassle then carrying a floor.
Oops! is too late.

When I'm sleeping in my portable, I do put down a blue tarp. Then I will put those interlocking anti fatigue mats on top of the tarp. Done this for years. It works really well. It is very slippery when you are breaking your floor down. I have camped up to 5 days and nights doing this and I works awesome.

I use 12 x 12 inch shag carpet squares.  Work good under my feet for insulation in the flipover and hole covers for my tipups.  They get soaked during the day but dry over night on the heater vent.
