Navionics/Garmin
« on: Dec 23, 2018, 11:14 AM »
Big change in Navionics Boating Apps. Dec. 19, Nanionics combined the Boating ($9.95 purchase $4.95 renew) and Boating HD ($54.95 & 14.95 respective) app into one app now called Boating Marine & Lakes HD. Now one annual subscription price of $14.99. When you open your Boating app ($9.95 / $4.95) app you will be directed to install Boating Marine & Lakes HD and your data will automatic transfer IF YOUR LOGGED INTO NAVIONICS. It's good until your subscription ends, than you buy another year at $14.95. Garmin added ActiveCaptain to the app which overlays "points of intrest" and ability to transfer map, markers etc. data to your Garmin comparable electronics. Very limited POI's on inland lakes found a couple on Mille Lacs & Superior. You ca add some if you wish

I knew things would change as soon as I found out that Garmin has acquired Navionics. These changes always seem to benefit Garmin at the consumers expense. Garmin is a predatory/proprietary company. Look what they did to DeLorme.

ALL of those people who purchased Panoptix and Livescope this year receive a FREE upgrade of their charts/maps that will include all the updates from the Navionics purchase.

I call that something valuable offered for free and a gesture of goodwill that shows they value their customers.

Garmin has some excellent products.  I use several of them and actually like the way they keep things updated.  That sort of development costs quite a bit. I think their pricing is very fair.  Do they make money?  I'm sure of it.  Is it a sour taste when a product goes to the unsupported side of things? You bet.  The boating app will continue to work, just no more updates.
What kind of development do you think went into the Panoptics Line?  Pricey! And they are going to protect that technology as best they can, to maximize profit.

I own Garmin products and will probably continue to buy them. No doubt, they make quality stuff. Who knows, I may buy a Panoptics someday if the price ever comes down. When I bought my first Garmin GPS 12 years ago, I could not download Delorme or any other good topo maps besides Garmin Map Source, which totally sucked at the time. I now have Onx hunt maps on my Garmin. So things have gotten better. I am still a little sour about the Delorme buyout, and now Navionics. I just hope I can still buy a Lowrance unit with pre-loaded Navionics in the future.

Fishforpike, I'm not knocking their R&D, Panoptics or any products. This is ground-breaking stuff that definitely benefits us as fishermen and consumers. They have also made state of the art bike computers for the cycling industry.  My problem is strictly the Navionics buyout. They had to acquire a perfectly good thing and change what didn't need to be changed. Now, my $4.95 yearly subscription has tripled. I can pretty much guarantee that this wouldn't have happened if navionics hadn't been bought out.

Likely that Garmin will actually invest in a better Navionics and the subscription increase will purchase additional functionality and better charts.

If you don't want the improvements, you are not forced to pay.

Just downloaded Navionics Boating Marine & Lakes HD last week to my cell phone, cost was $21.99.  Nice to have out on the early ice. Once there is enough ice for an atv I'll have my Humminbird with the Lake Master chip. From what I have seen the Lake Master HD lakes/chip is more detailed.

wyogator, not meaning to argue, I agree about the buyout but believe we will get more the money.  Yes, it was good as was in the Navionics world; still believe we will benefit.  Hoping the community edits will still be going.  I like the gas hole locations ID when the community edits are active.

I like the gas hole id too, Fish. I just checked my app and nothing has changed yet.
