Handicapped and need info
« on: Jan 18, 2018, 01:33 PM »
My dad is handicapped for the most part.  When we go ice fishing, I have to pull him out on my sled.  He can walk very little.  This makes it a huge pain in the ass to tow him around.  We can't go too far from the parking areas.  I have yet to get out this year because of work and kids.  With all the snow on the West side this year, I'm looking for spots with very little to no snow.

As warm as it is and if it cools off Gtown might be an easy pull Matt.
Polson bay you can park right at the ice too and snow should of shrunk pretty good...

that's a tough one..especially this year.. I used to take people with spinal injuries skiing in the winter and always thought there should be more ways to get individuals with mobility issues out in winter....I  always thought a boardwalk/dock out on ice in an area like seeley....where you could run a 4 wheeler down...then keep an area plowed would be a good start to get some creative juices flowing..you gotta figure there has to be some grant money somewhere for people with disabilities..but after current tax cut? sigh....maybe somebody out there knows someone with a private pond.. I know there is a group of people in the bitterroot that play hockey ..maybe look into areas that keep ice clear for hockey....just throwing out ideas..wish I could help more

Thanks Mike and Chris.

The usual spots this year are not an option.  And, we don't have a 4wheeler so we are very limited.  I just hope I can get him out this year.

Sage: Talked with my son and he's been on LMR. Tournament this week-end and it will be a walk on only start. He was there yesterday and the ice was good, layered but good. They walked out early and back about 3pm with out breaking through anywhere. State ramp is plowed and should be OK. Hope this helps. Good luck.

PapaJohn,
Thanks for the info.  I was considering LMR, but with the Tourney, I think I will steer clear.
If we get another cold snap, I might try Holter mid week or LMR

Best places I can think of are, Black sandy, on Hauser, or the Silos at Canyon Ferry by Townsend..  I've read there driving cars/pickups out on Canyon Ferry,, read back through the reports.. I know its a ways to go, but the EASYIST for him/you..

I'd suggest CF or Hauser. I fished both last weekend and wished I have not towed the ATV up because I could have easily driven on the ice like others were doing. I really enjoy doing up and fishing these lakes, my only complaint is it can be a little windy!

Spring meadow might be an option as well. If you park at the lot at Montana Wild it pretty short to the water. The path was clear of ice and snow and is concrete if you had walker or wheel chair. The only steep spot would be getting on/off at ice at the right side of the dock. But once on ice, you would only need to go out 10-20 yards and you would good to go for Bass perch and trout.
Formerly youngoutdoorsmans but wouldn't you know, I got older
