For Novice Pike Anglers
« on: Mar 01, 2006, 07:24 PM »
I am going to post this pic for the umpteenth time to show everyone that when you least expect it.....the brute will hit......this was from 2003 pre-fishing a tourney.....caught on a chartruese 1/16th ounce jig tipped with a saltie in 5' of water (excluding almost 3 feet of ice).....6lb original stren line with just a snap-swivel.....no leader....no fancy wire......and in an 8" hole nonetheless......(right beside a 10").....at least 4 times heading the head up the hole.........carefully .....letting the fish play......and the only brute that I have kept since then.....its not so much the flashy presentation......but in the right presentation to trigger the hit.....luck?....yeah....a little of that....luck heading it up the hole at least 4 times...yeah......the moral of the story, is one thing....patience playing the fish should exceed the anxiety to pull the brute up the hole....take er easy.....Grump

Patience is the key....It a part of fishing that is not talked about or discussed enuff...I think all of us no matter how long we have been fishing still get that rush when the bite hits, followed by the urge to bring her home. I have lost many fish while horsing them to the hole., But Im working on it, you almost need to pause and think..TAKE YOUR TIME...

On the other hand I have also lost a few fish while playing them in..

Something similer happened to me...

For the last few years I have fished all over Saskatchewan in various lakes and what not.  Iv'e spent hours fishing for "the big one" but could never catch it.  I tried 10 inch hooks, fishing in water 40 feet deep, for hours on end.  My result was 0.

On June 21st of last year I was fishing in a very small lake for Walleye at Dawn using a 1 inch jig, when I noticed out of the corner of my eye a thunderstorm moving in...I thought, hey great!  The Walleye should be biting like crazy now(Walleye turn on when the light level decreases rapidly)... But nothing for the next 10 minutes.  Then I felt a tug and 20 minutes later I pulled this 13.2 pounder into my rowboat...

Good advice Grump, how big was she?
Lots of fish are lost just under the ice when a person tries to horse them and they turn and get jammed sideways or a spare hook buries into the ice comming up the hole a simple twist for the fish and good bye.

Neat stories Grump and fishnut, great looking pike to. ;)2

Great post Grump and sound advise from a veteran angler. Tyler, its been nice knowing you but me thinks you are gone. I dont think Grump made it as personal as you took it. Regardless, we cant be having that on a family oriented site.

You bet you guys are missing something. There was a very nasty post that iceintheveins made saying some pretty nasty things about grump (and his wife). The post was obviously deleted before grump or anyone else saw it. I would guess by admin. My post was directed at iceintheveins and not at anyone else. There was an even nastier post that he made in the topic, THE BIG DEBATE that I also responded to. Both were directed directly at Grump. I responded to that one (in grumps defense in both cases I might add) but that was was deleted as well. I agree with the deletion of his posts but the fact that someone did that sure made my posts seem a little stupid. Oh well......who loves you Grump.

I never caught his posting in the big debate thread but I did see his posting on this thread.  Hate to see anybody go but if IceInThe Veins gets bounced here it won't hurt my feelings.  I know we've all got stories and we've all stretched fish but I'm tired of hearing about "almost" fish from this guy and about all the 20 pounders they have in this pont out there, not to mention slamming all proven pike methods but theirs.

I'll hold on name calling of the ones in question......Is there any way we can know if this guys been banned???

Grump....You hang in there from what you spoke about a few nights ago...don't want to see you go the same way as your good friend on here.......and thats a REAL NICE PIKE by the way....Esox
