Grand Lake (St. Mary's) Ohio
« on: Mar 01, 2006, 11:03 AM »
Just wondering if anyone fishes Grand Lake in Ohio or knows what kind of a fishery it is? With it's size I thought it might be worth the Ohio license and it's pretty close.

It use to be a top Perch and Crappie fishery.  Not anymore from what I'm told.  I fished it about 10 years ago.  Only luck I had was with the channel catfish.  It's a extremely shallow lake that is baron for the most part.  There are some piers on the south side that you can fish off of if you don't have a boat.  Some nice channels on that side too where crappies will hang out.  Water is stained with 6 inches of visibility.  Most of the lake runs 5 to 6 foot deep.  That's about all I can tell you, other than the Ohio guys who say it's horrible now.
When the bass season is over, there's nothing better than ice fishing!

Mounted a largemouth bass for a customer out of there about five years ago that was stunted big time. Big head skinny body. Awful looking fish.
I live in the midwest now but have fond memories of fishing in New England as a kid.

most people that I know of fish beaver creek, ( st. Marys spillway)  I pearsonaly have had no luck in the stream, but I have caught some nice cats in the main lake. great place to take kids to catch cats. very windy and choppy, after ice off the cat bite is pretty good, cut bait seems to be the best.
I have heard of guys catching perch, but I also have had no luck with them.
if your not walking on water, then you're not icefishing!
