Tip Up Hole Insulation
« on: Jan 01, 2018, 08:09 AM »
Thought I would share this with the frigid temps were seeing. Tip-up hole covers cost $8 which is stupid. I went to Walmart and in the hunting section bought rubber seat cushions for $3.65, cut them down to fit in a 5 gallon bucket, and cut slots and holes. I used them the Fri and Saturday and they worked great. And with temps and wind like this you need covers.

I did the same thing, only I used interlocking gym mats. I got them at Wal-Mart, 24sq ft for $14. I also used the mats to line the bottom of my Nanook sled to keep my gear from getting beat up and to hide all the screws from my hyflax runners.

Good ideas!
Can I go fishing? Unless it’s on Brant, I can’t.

I looked at those and like the idea for inside the sled. You get a lot more for the $$, but I preferred the seat cushions because they're twice as thick and designed to insulate. Either way, it's ridiculous what they try to charge for premade crap.

Another thing that helps a lot when it's below zero out is to pile snow (if there is any) on top of the foam cover. Just make sure to leave enough snow off the trigger mechanism. I have left my tip ups out over night in -25 weather and the next morning went to chip the holes out and it only took a couple wacks with the spud bar.

Great idea for the hole covers! Also use one of these or a garden kneeling pad from the $ store to put under your feet while sitting in your hut...you won't believe how well it insulates your feet from the ice and cold...also sit on one either in the shanty or the woods while deer hunting...feel the warmth!! Be safe, ><{{{;>

I bought a yoga mat from Walmart and traced out the bottom of a 5gal pal and then cut it an inch shorter in diameter. Work great to kneel on as well.

Best hole cover I've ever used. Tried this weekend in -5 and worked great.

I watched the video. Easy enough to put in place and pack up during your video, while in a nice cozy room, but I think they would be a pain out in the cold with cold hands. Just my thought.
